36 Quality Links are worth 100 lesser links
This might seem a strange idea but a few well placed links can make your site come alive better than hundreds or even thousands of low grade links. I am not saying that some links are worthless but I am saying that some links are worth far more than others. In this page I will explain why this is and I will introduce you to a way to easily obtain those links.
Then I will tell you a way to make it even simpler.
What makes a link good?
or why should I want a link of this type?
A good or great link will send a steady flow of visitors and will count significantly towards better search engine placement. Good links help people to find you. They make your content famous.
What makes a good link
Why a quality link is worth more than any other
A link can be placed pritty much anywhere these days. The reason for making a link was to send people to a page that was "linked" to subject or idea of the page with the lnk on it. Yes that is all there is to it.
Now it just so happens that links have also been counted as votes by search engines for a while now. So links are worth more than before. But this has resulted in "confusion and delays" or more accurately links that are only for engines.
while this does produce tiny votes and improves the site location in search results it does so only in very small steps
The worst kind of links are never seen by humans and discounted by engines and can cost a lot of money to get. Seems a bit pointless to me.
A good link should be a recommendation - this means it is from a page with a similar or complimentary subject matter, placed where people will see and click on a site with real visitors.
What about the SEO?
Or how much page rank?
It's humans all the way down
or what the point of the Internet is
Shocking, I know, but true. Humans made the Internet and later the world wide web in order to communicate about things.
Links are communication.
If you try to communicate to C++ programmers about Hip Hop Dance Moves you are likely to hold the interest of a small number (if any at all) but if you address that same speach to a Hip Hop class you will have far more attention.
The same goes for links. A link to you is a message that says come visit. But to get visitors that link has to be seen by people and those people must be interested in what the link says might be at the other end.
Once they arrive if they discover the link lied they will go very quickly away again.
The best links appeal to people.
Getting Quality Links
How to obtain and create them
The short story is that you should be seeking both.
A passive link is create by making content on your site that is great, impressive, witty, timely or news worthy. This content will then gain links from site owners that you impressed.
But to impress people you first need to get them to your site. That is where pro-active links come in.
Pro-active links are links you go out and actually ask for. However if you start begging people for links you will soon have no friends. The list that follows details the best ways to pro-actively obtain links.
Pro-Active Links
Ways to get them without begging
- Write Guest Articles - writing (free) content for other people's sites is a good way to get a few quality links. You can cite yourself in the content (with links) and you be sure that the topic of the page matches the topic of the page(s) you link to.
- Create a lens - this is quite a lot of work as it requires that you get links to the lens and promote it. It is not for the faint of heart as it needs to be backed up with a lot of hard work to be properly effective.
- Mutually review - find a peer site with a similar topic and arrange to review and be reviewed. This is far more effective than link swaps as the links are placed before in front of real readers.
- Create a membership account with blogs that have this option (within your niche). Be sure to leave a link to your site. Check the new profile page for rel="nofollow" (not good) and assuming you find that this has not been added participate with the topics by posting good quality comments. This enhances the profile of your profile. Come back every week and comment. Link to some posts you have commented on.
- Leave deeply insightful or mildly controversial comments on the blogs of the leading authorities of your subject. This works best if you have some passive link content that expands on your comment. This method is a bit like fishing and you may have to try several times before you get a nibble. Consider this an ongoing project.
- Join a question and answer group (like yahoo answers) and answer questions on your topic. Many such sites allow you to cite sources and (so long as it might be true) you can cite your site.
- Join a forum and attempt to gently establish yourself as a topic expert by being swift with good quality answers. Cite your site only at the choicest moments to avoid diluting your reputation. Over time you will establish a body of people who respect your input and a body of text that search engines will serve as results. Over time this will create links in strange places and may offer the opportunity to outright ask for a link in return for a spectacular round of help.
- Work on the design or code for other sites. Such an effort is often paid out with a permanent link.
- Hire yourself out as a copy writer - this (much like guest blogging) has opportunities for links to self although often without the "bio line".
- Leave comments on lots of sites that add something to the discussion (like a new idea or point of view). The comment must stand out as a quality contribution or the link you supply with it will never get attention. It should also be an early comment (first three).
- Link to and befriend a low authority blogger (a blogger whose blog is small scale and unnoticed) make a big fuss of this "rough diamond" and be liberal with you praise and encouragement. Do everything you can to help them stay motivated and to feel good about themselves. Be assured that you will figure largely in this bloggers content as a result so try to be genuine in your praise as shallowness will backfire sooner or later.
- Participate in and host "blog carnivals" which are roving lists of "the latest on..." on a subject in your niche - make sure you write something worth being linked to for each episode.
