Should I buy a 3D TV?

With the advent of of 3-dimensional television, I haven't seen much debate over what people will actually watch. With a huge entry price to 3D TVs, will this type of television really become a household item or is it just a fad?

I believe 3D TVs are just a passing fad. The high cost, the goofy glasses, the recency of high definition TV, and 3D sicness syndrome will make it difficult for three dimensional TVs to take hold.

So much for my opinion, what do you think?

3D Television Glasses

One barrier of 3D TVs.

There is a high cost to entry of 3D Tv's. One of the high costs is the 3D glasses. The Sony glasses listed here are $135 as of January 2011. The problem is with a family of four or a family of six, this becomes a $540 or $810 investment plus the price of the 3D television. And if glasses are like remote controls or Wii remotes, they'll be difficult to find when you want to watch your 3D TV.

Another 3D TV Barrier

Another TV entry barrier are the 3D TV prices. As this is a new technology, the prices are going to remain high until there is a sufficient market. The problem is the introduction of high definition TVs less than 10 years ago. Everyone is invested in high definition, Plasma TVs, and LCD TVs.

3D Sickness Syndrome

Another barrier of 3D TVs

One thing about 3D televisions is that not everyone can watch it. 3D sickness or 3D syndrome is something people wanting to purchase a new television will need to consider.

The Plus Side of the 3D TV is the picture

But for all the negatives of 3DTV, the picture is spectacular. The image is like nothing you've seen before.

I'm a 3D TV Fan

R4S says:

Its here to stay. I own one and it has completely returned the investment. I can understand people not caring for it themselves, but the criticism about wearing glasses is silly. Did anyone stop reading books when your eyes starting going funny? 3DTV is a fantastic experience.

ajgodinho says:

This time, I think it's here to stay, like I said earlier, it will take some time to become mainstream.

Pixelrage says:

I'm a total fan of the current 3D phase of movies - I wouldn't care if they started converting movies that weren't shot with 3D cameras into 3D films. I do think this will only get better with the upcoming glasses-free 3DTVs!

Anything you would like to add about 3D televisions

I think at this time, most people are still in the process of switching to HD TV. The prices have dropped so much and it's becoming affordable to get one. However, in terms of 3D TV, it's going to take at least 3 to 5 years for it to become mainstream. I'll probably wait until we have 3D TVs that don't require wearing the 3D glasses.

    Thanks for visiting my lens!
On this topic, I think it would be insane to get a s3DTV (glasses required)...might as well wait for the as3DTVs (no glasses), they are allegedly coming out in 2012.
