3D: A Bold New World for Artists
3D Art Versus Traditional Artwork
I specialize in figure drawing and portraits of women in my hand drawings, and have noticed that translates in my 3D work. You will see my models in close up portraits or with a focus on form and pose versus scene and background.I really love hand drawing figures, but am so enticed by the idea of creating a fully poseable 3D model that can be moved and turned without creating an entirely new piece of artwork.
It is like having your very own Barbie doll, but these Barbie dolls can be changed to exactly what you want and come to life!
The model you see here is more of an exotic woman, her name is Lawan, which means "beautiful" in Thai. I think this suits her characteristics well.

3D Animation Software
If you want to get into 3D animation, try one of these products.
I use Carrara for all of my 3D work and love it. Daz is also good, but as an amateur, Carrara is the most user friendly and interactive software I have tried.
The software is almost limitless in what you can create. It can be used to create movies, overlay 3D work on real photos or movies, and on and on.

Can 3D Art be Fine Art?
I am new to 3D art and have noticed it is not really accepted as fine art, and sometimes not accepted at all as "real" artwork.
As an artist who has done hand drawing, 3D, and digital design, I beleive that they are different, but equal. The labor that goes into good quality 3D and digital work can often be more painstaking than hand-drawing.
I would be proud to show my work and that of other gifted artists I have seen in a gallery, but the galleries I have approached will not even consider showng my 3d or digital work.

What is involved in Creating a 3D model?
I usually start with Victoria when I want a model that looks very realistic. I use Aiko when I want to use a model with a smaller frame or for a more "cartoon" or "anime" look. Stephanie is another great model, she is more muscular and athletic.
The models are fully customizeable in almost every feature. You can change the smallest details like tooth spacing or jaw placement. You can create other-worldly creatures like vampires or aliens. You can even import your own skin tone to use on a model.
Once all of those details are worked out, I create the background scene. You have to find just the right scene to compliment your character, this includes lighting and props, camera angles, as well as wardrobe. You may have a great model, but if not set for the most impact in the right scene, all the hard work you have done won't pay off.
If you decide to get into 3D design and animation, make sure your computer supports it, as it takes TONS of memory to create quality designs and save them. I have to use an external hard drive and flash drives to access my work and keep my computer running the program fast enough.
It is absolutely an amazing arena of art, and I have only scratched the surface here. As I gain experience with the program and learn more about 3D design and animation, I am intrigued further.

3D Animation: The Wave of the Future

3D animation is used in all major gaming applications, movies, and you are starting to see it more and more in television advertisements because it is cheaper than hiring an actor. You see it all over the place online and probably have used a fun little application made with 3D design and/or animation.
I don't know that 3D actors will ever fully replace human actors, but it is definately up and coming and has not finished expanding it's reach yet. 3D is and will be used more extensively in all walks of life, from professional to personal applications. Get in on the action now as an investor or designer and you may reap huge rewards later.
According to the Occupational Outlook Hanbook ...
the top Artist's employed were multi-media artists and animators, a whopping 87,000 of the 218,000 art related jobs in 2006. I wonder what that number is today?
This field is expected to grow FASTER than average due to the high demand for better graphics in games, movies, and the internet.
