Geography is moving from niche to the mainstream. Are you keeping up?

Since satellites started photographing Earth from space nearly four decades ago, their images have inspired excitement, introspection, and, often, fear. Like all information, satellite imagery is in itself neutral. But satellite imagery is a particularly powerful sort of information, revealing both comprehensive vistas and surprising details. Its benefits can be immense, but so can its costs.

Spot

The French operator is the world leader with a market share of more than 50%

Spot Image, which has been in existence for 17 years, including 13 years of commercial activity, controls over half (55%) of the satellite imagery market worldwide, its primary competitor being American.

Spot Image owes this leading position to its determination to succeed, which enabled the company to be the first to offer high-resolution images (lOm in panchromatic, 20m in multispectral) with a wide field of view (60km) in 1986. It is also thanks to this determination that the company is able to rely on three operational satellites (Spot-1, -2 and -4), a worldwide network of 23 receiving stations and more.

There is a hidden revolution going on: geography is moving from niche to the mainstream. News reports routinely include maps and satellite images. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are showing up more and more frequently as standard features in automobiles and cell phones. Many of the major database vendors have made geographic data types standard in their flagship products.

Garmin GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

Geographic Information Analysis

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing data. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. Mapmaking and geographic analysis are not new, but a GIS performs these tasks better and faster than do the old manual methods
