The PS Vita price has been announced as $299 with 3G and $249 without. Sony have said that they don't need to compete with Nintedo on price and I think they're right. The PS Vita has a lot of technology packed into it and will appeal to more sophisticated and older gamers who will be less concerned with actual price and more concerned with value for money.

The release date for the PS Vita is Feb 22nd 2012.

PS Vita Key Features:
- High quality 5" OLED multi-touch touchscreen and rear touchpad. The rear touchpad allows you to interact with the game from behind. Interesting and it keeps your fingers from blocking the screen.
- Accurate motion and tilt sensors, GPS and electronic compass. All of these inputs really open up the possibilities for playing games within the physical world.
- Front and rear camera to bring the real world into games.
- Microphone which can be used for game control.
- Dual analog sticks (great for fighting games)
- Wifi and 3G (3G in premium model) to allow for social interaction, access to the PlayStation Network and game saving.
- Saved games can be moved from the PS3 to the Vita and back.
- PS Vita "Near" for proximity based social interaction

3DS vs Vita

3DS vs Vita: Display

3DS Screen specs:
Upper LCD screen: 800 x 240
Lower LCD screen: 320 x 240

PS Vita Screen specs:
OLED Screen: 960 x 544

The PS Vita has a larger display using OLED technology - games will look very good on the Vita. OLED screens have greater contrast, colors are more vibrant and blacks are blacker. Also OLED screens have a wide viewing angle and are bright with low power usage.

The 3DS screen will look great compared to older hand-helds and of course has it's flagship feature the 3D screen. 3D is technologically very clever. Technology fanatics may want the 3DS just for this reason.

The large clear screen of the Vita appeals to me. But then the gameplay is more important to me than flashy graphics and effects. I'll soon forget about those when I'm immersed in a game.

3DS vs Vita: Sensors and Controls

The PS Vita has gone all out for sensors and controls. It has two analog mini joysticks, front and rear touchpads, microphone and an array of sensors for movement, direction and location. I think this will lead to some interesting game designs. I'm intrigued by the rear touchpad.

The 3DS does have a second screen which is a touchscreen which can be effectively used to provide custom controls without interfering with the main game screen. The DS has had a touchscreen for a while so Nintendo know what they are doing here.

For me the PS Vita slightly has the edge here. But that separate touchscreen on the DS is compelling.

3DS Games vs PS Vita Games

For many people it's all about the games really. A great console is irrelevant if the best games aren't available on it. There has been a lot of discussion about the poor selection of games available for the 3DS which the PS Vita launch titles are impressive. But it does depend on what sort of games you enjoy. Most of the commentators are probably more interested in sophisticated games and games that show off new technology - this does tend to tip the balance in favor of the Vita. But what games do you play? That's what matters. Let's take a look at the flagship games for each platform.

Now you see, I was all set to come in on the side of the PS Vita. But then The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. I'm a long-time RPG fan and I don't want to miss out on this game. This legendary game has been given an update and the 3D treatment. This is a great opportunity for younger gamers to play a classic game without it feeling dated, and long-time gamers will love the nostalgia with a modern touch. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D gets excellent reviews.

See more 3DS Games.

But then, Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the PS Vita looks amazing. (The Vita isn't out at time of writing.) Sony have put everything into this game to show off the cool new controls and the amazing screen. And I do love a bit of adventure.

3DS vs PS Vita: Release Dates

The 3DS is already out with a price-reduced version on Aug 12 2011. It's available for Christmas 2011 along with a range of games.

The PS Vita's release date is February 22nd 2012 with the pre-release bundle available on Feb 15th. You can preorder the PS VIta from Amazon with a price drop promise - if the price gets reduced before release you'll be charged the lower price. So you could give it as a Christmas gift and give a print-out picture of it!

This is a big factor in favor of the 3DS. It's first to market and you can actually get your hands on it now.

3DS!!!!!
i went to the cinema to watch the avengers 3D (it was the 1st time i watched a 3D movie) and i was really impressed that the movie looked just like a nintendo 3DS. Now, is impressive that a 3DS looks just like a 3D movie without using glasses.
and i love classic games. so this s 4 me.

3DS IS THE BEST PS VITA JUST IS A COPY CAT (FALIURE)

3DS ALL THE WAY

David says:

3DS

Subversion Tactics says:

I own both a PS Vita & 3DS and both are awesome gaming machines. As much as I love many of the features on the Vita, I'm finding myself playing my 3DS more. It's not because of the 3D, as I rarely use it unless necessary. And I honestly wish the OS of the 3DS was more organized and structured as it is on the Vita. But there's something about 3DS games that I find more addicting and fun than the Vita game library at the moment. Take a moment to play any Nintendo game like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 3D Land, and/or even Mario Kart 7, and you'll see what I mean. Perhaps Sony will come out with some awesome titles of their own. But right now, the Nintendo 3DS seems to be winning me over in the content department with their first party titles. Keep 'em coming Nintendo!

noah greene says:

I know that sony is steeling from the nintendo 3ds

Brian says:

Half the features on vita were taken from 3DS! Touch screen, Argumented rreality, cartridges, gyro scope! What the hell. Besides the games may not have as good graphics as the vita but they are WAY better. Like starfox, mario kart, legend of zelda, AND resident evil, definitley go for 3DS

Omar says:

I think the nintendo 3ds is better.
its price is purrfect :P.
and the gameplay is very AWESOME
the AR Card technology is so.. wow
and the 3D Omg it just..in mario kart 7 the squid ink looks real.. seriously!
Note to haters:If you dont like the 3D just TURN IT OFF.. God.
but I didnt try much of the Vita so.. once I try it ill see for real whats better

jason says:

Ok I played psvita and got bored with it way to quick. And every one is foregetting the street pass and the find me on the 3ds and the game play on 3ds is in my opinion better the the levitate and the back touchpad on the Psvita is useless.

Why do you want to know my name, stalker says:

Ps vita is great but right now the only great games are around 5 games. But the 3ds has a ton ( and just saying i am not a nintendo fanboy) but 5 games is somthing .Great graphics with only 5 games, tons of games but lacks of graphics. The ps vita does have lots of functions like psn where you can buy games (of the vita) for a cheaper price. The 3ds has the e-shop where you buy games but not like real 3ds games.3ds is cheaper wich means more games. And i wanted to buy a ps vita but the had no memory cards.3ds you dont need it.And why are whe fighting its your taste.Last thing,i love rpg first person shooters games but only ps vita has it.3ds has FPS but hell if you watch it in 3d,Now saying its worser than your naked grand mom.But my opinion is 3ds /:)

~OMEGA~ says:

I agree with RPG Elitist, all we have now are mindless shooting games with a drop of story in them if you don't play nintendo the your missing out

~OMEGA~ says:

Though i do agree that nintendo needs to improve their hardware and such because hey if their trying to cater to a kid/casual/family does that mean they have to make ok systems? no, let the games cater to familys, now i have two hypothesis 1. Nintendo releases to many systems while sony has only a couple mainly different/updated versions of the same system nintendo has released about 14 systems (including their first attempt at 3d the virtual boy) and look at microsoft only 2 game systems and they're probally one of the most popular companys out there. but me being the die-hard nintendo fan i am will stick with nintendo through it all belive me i do in fact have microsoft and sony gaming products in my home and they're great but nintendo will always be my first choice. now about the N3DS screen, nintendo would've gone with OLED if they could have but if they had wanted to then they couldn't have had 3D as well. Let me explain the pixles of an OLED screen create their own light and thats why they're so low power, to get the parallax barrier (the offical name of the 3D screen used in the 3DS) to work light goes in to the 3d screen but instead of going strait back out when 3D is activated the light is refracted so the correct image goes to the correct eye if an OLED screen had been used the auto 3d would not work.

~=3DS!!!=~

SCOTT says:

Most definitely the 3DS. Games are cheaper, it's more portable, it has a fresh new design, and it has 3D video recording and picture captures! Sales in Japan are proof that the 3DS is more appealing to people around the world.

Aizen06 says:

3DS will once again take the market with its low cost, good game library, and most importantly the 3D feature. Nintendo always plays smart by introducing a unique feature in it's product that sets it aside from other systems. When they introduced the two screens on NDS they took the handheld market and sold over 150 million unites. Plus titles like Resident evil revelation, Zelda ocarina of time, MGS Snake eater, and kingdom of hearts will surely secure 3DS position as the dominate handheld once again. I'm not against the vita, but due to it's bulky design as the original psp, and it doesn't offer anything new other than better graphics, which isn't something a true gamer tends to look for.

RPG Elitist says:

I laugh at all the people who say the 3DS is only for kids or casual gamers. I'm 18 years old and about as hardcore as they come, and I can tell you right now that the 3DS is obviously the better system here. Not only is it cheaper, but the game library is made up of stuff other than your typical mindless shooting fest. Nintendo has crafted a system that promotes innovation and opens up doors to video game genres that require a little more thought than mashing the R1 button for a few hours. All the good games are heading to the 3DS.

I have nothing against the Vita as a system, but face it--the game library sucks just like the PSP's did, and this generation is inevitably going to repeat itself. Sissies who like to play unbelievably easy gore-fests will buy Sony's system and call themselves "hardcore," and we Level 72 Paladins will proudly purchase the Nintendo system, actually using our brains to play games that have what objectively matters: great gameplay and deep, involving stories.

Mark says:

For all those saying that the 3DS is only for the younger generation are obviously ignoring some of the most attractive titles for the 3DS such as Resident Evil Revelations and Monster Hunter 4. After the price cut, the 3Ds is definitely better in terms of price and boast some great exclusives that I still get great pleasure playing even though I am in my early twenties. (Who doesn't still like the Mario and Zelda series?) Plus, the 3DS offers great titles in the eShop such as Metroid 2 and Pushmo.

SuperS123 says:

I'm on the side of the nintendo 3ds forever :) not because I don't like the Vita, because it's a great system, the problem is that I don't like the games of it, I'm 15 years old and I choose for example luigi's mansion 2 over uncharted so the vita games are not made for me, but its still a great device and maybe I'll buy one but not in the release date :)

Duck man says:

I have 3DS geting Vita After but graphics is not every thing look at DS and PSP the DS sold 146.42 million units worldwide and PSP sold 71.4 million units Worldwide

Your Mother says:

Obviously the Nintendo 3DS!
It's cheaper and it's games are cheaper too!
And unlike Sony, Nintendo makes their own games too!
I mean c'mon . Power isnt everything.
Power in a console is not what makes its games fun!
And 3D is awesome!
Oooh HD Screens! We see that at home everyday!
Typically all those fools who say 3DS is for casual gamers can go take a hike!
Is Resident Evil : Revelations for casuals?NO. Is Tekken for casuals. NEIGH!
What does a horse eat? HAY!

It comes down to this.
- You save money on the console
- You save money on games
- 3D is an amazing feature
- Better games.

The 3DS is a big improvement from the DS and it has a huge IMPAC on the portable market

Just look at the sales bitches!

Yong says:

3DS!!! The games are awesome and the 3D is

Monkey Man says:

3DS by far! It's $250AU, very good games, mostly Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart , and depth in games the Vita can only dream of!

Diogo says:

3ds is much better. The screen is smaller, that is true. The graphics are worst, that is true. But the gameplay is much better, it is faster(don't lagg in games and don't take to much to load a game) and the games are better. And the ps vita is to big...

And 3ds have lots of free apps that are amazing!!!

sora says:

definitely the 3ds. It has kingdom hearts and animal crossing in 3D!! ps vita doesnt have any interesting games to play.

sora says:

definitely 3ds. it has kingdom hearts and animal crossing in 3D!!

grifith says:

PS Vita

Adam says:

the ps vita is much better. the 3DS hurts your eyes

Kai says:

The PS Vita is overall better... but the 3DS is definitely NOT just for little kids. MGS3 and Resident Evil are not kid games. But when it comes to specs and the potential, the PS Vita wins easily. Sure, some of the games for 3DS are pretty good but.... ehhhhhhh.

Vitasbetter says:

Starfox and Zelda are just remakes of games I destroyed way back in the day. Basically so is mario kart. So you want me to buy a 3ds just for a crappy RE port. Yeah right.

Evan says:

I hate all you fanboys!!! (both sides). I never favor a company over another. I have alot of expirence with both, and in my time with them is feel that the PS Vita pulls through. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy my 3DS but i take my PS Vita with me everywhere. I just feel the PS Vita has more of a potential than the 3DS, which has already been out a while. I just feel that the 3DS is more "Little Kidish". So if you're looking for something realitivly cheep to burn some time on the bus or train, go for the 3DS. But if you are looking for the top of the line portable gaming, go for the PS Vita

EEEE says:

PlayStation Pwn 3DS says:

Joseph says:

Since the PS Vita has 3G, Skype, and many other awesome features (web browsing is really important in my opinion), the PS Vita is pretty much my work AND play device. Hell, I can even check my email on the PS Vita (although it is a little difficult, but can be done). And I can use it on the go without having to depend on a WiFi hot spot. The 3DS, although really cool with the whole 3D thing, I would rarely use it as much. Oh, and Cross-play with my PS3 is pretty cool too. I don't know if the 3DS works with the Wii or not.

Matthew says:

As a GA at Gamestop I personally feel that the ps vita has much more potential in that sony knows to win this generation war they need to focus on the games and by putting alot of tech in this system establishes a great foundation

hayden says:

Vita smashes 3DS in every way

theconman says:

the vita is way better for its rear touchscreen and dual analog sticks with some kick ass games suck on that nintendo

ur mother says:

vita

Ronny says:

I love gundam, but arsitecture grafic render and cpu process 800-1000 mhz same cpu computer, 3DS process grafic and cpu under ps vita. if same then umd can be running on 3DS, if not same then programming operating system ... can't render umd/iso playstation 1 by 3DS. and otherwise programing os can be running by ps vita.

Ryan says:

The ps vita is quite costly for a handheld but I feel that the price could be reduced a little bit because according to a few websites in only costs $159.99 to make, $249.99 is ridiculous for how much it costs to make, maybe lower it to $209.99 for wifi and $249.99 for 3g. 3ds only costs around $100 to make so $169.99 is justifiable Still, you gotta love that Vita!

Truth says:

Vita is a good console, and I'm unbiased, as I once owned a DS as well. Vita is more expensive, but has much better potential than gimmicky 3D.
Note: To all people who say the Vita stole things from the 3ds... Touch screen: Also on iPod touch, iPad, tablets, ereaders etc... stolen? augmented reality, also available on most devices with a camera... gryoscope, also on most apple products.

Skyler says:

I loved the DS brand (when I was 10)!I've played a 3DS, and the 3D is annoying. I was tentative to buy the Vita because of the price, but considering the features it has, it is well worth the money. Skip the shit out of the 3DS.

Erik says:

There is no real comparison from a technical standpoint.
The Vita crushes the 3ds in every technical aspect. Screen, controls, features, all categories go to the Vita. Memory, CPU, GPU, again all go to the Vita.
Game catalog. Well lets see... From day 1 Vita has not only the 24 stated release titles, and the AR proof of concept suite. But the PSN's mini's collection, the PSP games on PSN and crossover gaming to its console big brother. At launch Vita has more games then any other Portable I can remember. And it only gets better from there.
As far as titles... This is a non argument. If you like Mario and Zelda, you will own a Nintendo something. No choice there. But I live in a multi platform house and other then Ninetendo only titles, all other games are played on the Playstations. Someone talked about Tekken.... Would you truly like it better on the single top screen on the DS, or on the OLED touchscreen of the Vita... Nintendo makes no bones about their target demographic. They sell to kids, families and casual. Any hardcore fanboys they have left are bonus to them.
Bottom line is price. The DS series is cheaper, its only win in the whole debate, but it is cheaper because it does LESS. No 3G, single (if any) camera, single touch, old screen, direct interactivity to its console mate, lousy online support/lifestyle and a game library pointed towards a family friendly and younger audience.
Vita Wins... Hands down
As a parting shot I would like to state... I HATE MARIO, and Zelda, and Kong. That said for me and many like me you can remove a big chunk of the "library" nintendo has.

BRUCE says:

The games appeal to me more, and it has the PSP's and PS1's library, which is also a plus. The extra power and better screen don't hurt either.

Note : I don't care about uncharted, I'd rather play a game like Gravity Rush or one of the millions of RPG's released for the PSP.

Unknown says:

Ps vita will murder 3ds because the only thing new about the 3ds is its in 3d the games are limited and not as good as ps vita games + Sony kills the shit out of Nintendo

Mikhail says:

Vita is better for me 'cause it has a better hardware. Any simulator will be better on Vita, any hardcore game and so on. I'm tired of these Nintendo exclusives (In exception of Zelda games). In my opinion Vita is not just a portable PS3. Yea it has games who are better in a home console, but gaming experience is diferent in a portable, you can take it wherever you want, it also have exclusives, touch screen controls, It's better to type messages etc.

memeking says:

PS Vita is very powerful and has great games for it as well as 3DS.... More or less. I was surprised *ahem that Nintendo actually released a handheld that pitied the Wii. ( I was expecting a bit less powerful than Gamecube) TRULY A BOLD MOVE that proved fatal to Nintendo due to the bad name making it sound like a DS skew and giving it a ridiculous launch price. I'm glad these two can compete more so than last generation, pressuring game developers to make games that make the graphics on Infinity blade look like my 5 dollar calculator. CHEERS!!!

Josiah says:

Vita all the way.

Jeff says:

PS Vita all the way. Graphics and power just dominate over the 3DS. And for the people talking about price and value, correct me if I'm wrong but when the 3DS launched it sold for $250 just like the Vita will be selling for. Sure the OLDER 3DS games are cheaper but for new releases, you're looking roughly at $30-40 and Vita games are ranging between $30-50.

Marissa says:

Honestly people, if a 3ds and a ps vita were placed on a table in front of you, and you could take one, which one would you take? I would take the Vita. Just take out the factor of money for a second. PS Vita is simply a superior system. You're getting what you pay for in this situation, and the Vita's got it all. If you're a casual gamer, just get the 3ds.

Brandon says:

It wins in every round.
Near PS3 Graphics and Two Analogs.
Who wants a 3DS? Basically it is aimed at 10 year olds.

ITookAnArrow says:

3DS for little kids who love playing a portable device where the screen is not wisely used. I mean look at the screen, it's smaller because it was not extended till the end of the screen.

Vita looks amazing, it's high-tech and it has this killer look to it.

Game-Critic says:

TBH... Nintendo for little kids (babies that can't afford expensive stuff) and PS Vita for teens and gamers !!! PS Vita wins it all apart from the price and 3D =='

Alpha_Male321 says:

I always see Sony stuff as more of a rich person's brand and Nintendo as not so rich. Anyway I think the price for Sony is right because of all the specs and features put into it and the 3DS is only cheaper to get more people to buy it which leaves not many people wanting to buy the PS vita. PS Vita for the win !!!

vi3m3n says:

ps vita is the best
fuckin 3ds touch not very reponsive
psvita higher ram higher processor touch more responsive (like android or IOS)
3ds ram is suck proccesor suck too

vijae anan says:

3DS sick Mans hand held. PS Vita BEST !

Easy says:

Ps Vita. BTW the release date was just announced, February 22, 2012. OR if you get a bundle, blah blah blah... But PS Vita

Bun Narethdy says:

For my point of view the PS Vita is the better value that I take it in my mine and want to get it in my hand.

says:

I love Nintendo, but I have to say the 3DS has not made the impact the Wii or DS had. As PS3 and Xbox target the more hardcore gamers, Nintendo had successfully targeted casual gamers. However, with smartphones and gaming apps, Nintendo is going to have a tougher time.

Teddy_Steele says:

PS Vita. Its not even close. As far as features, quality & vison, the Sony product blows away the simplistic novelty of the Nintendo system.

DinosaurEgg says:

The PS Vita wins for me. 3D handheld gaming doesn't really appeal to me. But the rear trackpad on the Vita looks very cool. And I prefer the look of the Vita - its sleek and sophisticated.

Who should buy the Nintendo 3DS?

Kids, Nintendo fans

The Nintendo 3DS is a winner for the younger audience. It has lots of kid-friendly games. Once my boys move on from the LeapPad Explorer the Nintendo 3DS will be a strong contender for them. It has LEGO Star Wars III The Clone Wars 3D, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean and Combat of Giants Dinosaurs. Lots of great games for the younger crowd that the Nintendo DS has catered to so well.

It's also a good choice for those who have grown up with Nintendo and are loyal to the brand and its games franchises. There are games for an older audience too.

The Nintendo 3DS is out now so anyone who can't wait for a new handheld console should go with the 3DS. Of course there will be some gamers who will want both platforms.

Who should by the PS Vita?

Teens, Adult Gamers

The PS Vita is the more sophisticated handheld console for hard core gamers and grownups. Its appearance is much more sophisticated. It's packed with technology - early adopters will love it.

It's also a good choice for those with a PS3 in the house - you can transfer saved games between the consoles. We have a PS3 so this is interesting.

Teens and young adults are likely to make good use of the social and physical location features of the PS Vita. If we had had these as students I can imagine we would have had a lot of fun.
