Introducing the Revolutionary iPhone 3G

I recently purchased an new iPhone 3G 16G and absolutely love it! Ever since I took it out of the nicely designed packaging I've been playing around with the settings, web browsing, emailing from anywhere and downloading multiple fun and incredibly useful applications.

I'm sure that most of you have heard of the iPhone however in case you've missed out on the most popular phone out there I'll begin by listing a few details before going into what I believe makes this phone so great.

iPhone Features

Advertised features for the iPhone

Below is a list of features available on the iPhone. This isn't an exhaustive list, but does cover off some of the main ones:
  • gorgeous touch screen (3.5 inch diagonal) with a resolution of 320 x 480
  • safari web browser
  • google maps
  • wi-fi enabled
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • quad-band
  • dimensions are 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches (115 x 61 x 11.6mm), with a weight of 135 grams

But what makes it so great?

usability of the iPhone

There is massive competition within the mobile phone industry and many of the features listed above are available for multiple phones across all networks without signing up for a long contract. So, why really purchase the iPhone?

Well, it's not just the features, it's how Apple has made them so intuitive and usable.

Almost all functionality is implemented using the touch screen. There is only one button on the bottom of the phone which usually is used as the 'home' button (though this can be changed in the settings).

The screen itself supports multi-touch technology, allowing you to zoom in and out by pinching or opening up two fingers. I'm sure games and other apps will add to this in the very near future.

It looks fantastic. The icons and other graphics displayed on the screen are incredibly crisp and clear.

Staying Connected

sending and receiving from multiple email accounts

One of my favorite features is the ability to send and receive from all of my email accounts.

You can set up the iPhone to use multiple email accounts including Microsoft Exchange (supports push), your MobileMe account, webmail from google, yahoo, and AOL, or any other email account you have that supports POP/IMAP.

Excluding the MS Exchange accounts that support push, you have the ability to set how often your iPhone checks for new messages. When you receive an email a number is displayed above the mail icon. Clicking on it will show you a list of all your email accounts as well as the unread messages in each.

Viewing a particular account will allow you to send messages from it. This is fantastic for anyone who hosts multiple domains or has different email accounts set up for specific purposes.

The All Important App Store

extending the iPhone functionality by downloading third party applications

Out of all the cool features, this may be the one I love most.

With the iPhone you are able to connect to the App Store to download hundreds of widgets ranging from games to finance to productivity applications.

Many of these applications are free; however some of the more advanced or intricate ones have a cost associated with them. They can be easily and all too quickly purchased through your iTunes account.

Any applications developed can take advantage of the entire platform, allowing them to use the GPS, camera, and motion sensing capabilities inherent within the iPhone itself.

GPS Enabled Applications

apps that know exactly where you are

The 3G iPhone comes with GPS, allowing you to pinpoint exactly where you are in the world. You can then display your position within google maps.

However there is much more to it. Thanks to the App Store and many third party developers, you can use the GPS to find restaurants, movie theatres, flickr albums and much more all based on your location.

All of this allows you to find and explore new places all around you.

Although you make a very good case for the iphone - and you clearly love yours! - i was wondering what you thought about the other high spec phones on the market these days. For example the Samsung Omnia comes with alot of the features mentioned above, but also supports MS Office which I would imagine some people might think makes that an even better spec phone. It is also a very sleek design - possibly rivalling the iphone. And i got my Omnia for free!
