Writing a longer essay
The 3-point structure is often an useful tool for writing essays because it offers a starting point and it can be adapted to suit most purposes. The 3-point structure simply follows the direction determined by the classic thesis which indicates a claim with three supporting reasons. Each supporting reason is explored in order of presentation in thesis.
For example, a thesis such as -- Genre fiction should generate more respect than literary fiction from the literary establishment because it more accurately reflects American values, upholds strong moral standards, and is more uplifting-- automatically lends itself to a 3-point structure.
However the five paragraph essay is not appropriate for a longer paper or article. So what do you do? There is a simple way you can expand your short essay that is built on the typical three-point structure.

Expanding The 3-Point Essay
3-on-3
How do you build a 3-point structure into a 4+ page paper? By utilizing the 3X3 tool--come up with 3 statements to further develop each supporting reason. For example, to develop the reason that genre fiction more accurately reflects American values than literary fiction you could say that genre fiction does this by having good triumph over evil, demonstrating the importance of family, and showcasing characters who pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
Simply develop a paragraph for each of these points and now you have nine paragraphs (three subpoints for three main points equals nine) and add on an introduction and conclusion.

- I found amazing how simple is writing if you know the basic rules (and creatively break them). In our country a lot of people still believe writing can't thought, it is matter of talent, gift from gods etc. Well, this is actually good for me. Less competition:)
