3rd and Bird Games

A firm favourite when it comes to traditional games for kids is making jigsaw puzzles. My two-year-old has been a huge fan of them since she was a baby!

There are two options available for 3rd and Bird fans. The 4-in-1 puzzle set above contains four puzzles with different numbers of pieces - 12, 16, 20 and 24 pieces - each making up a cute 3rd and Bird scene. It states suitable for 3 years and over but if your child, like mine, is fine playing with smaller items and doesn't try to put them near their mouth, then buy according to their puzzle-making ability and help/supervise younger ones. Made by Ravensburger so you can expect a top quality product - their puzzles are, in my opinion, far superior to many of the others out there!

The other version available is the 3rd and Bird Giant Floor Puzzle below, also by Ravensburger. We don't have this one but we do have the Octonauts version and based on that, would not hesitate to buy this one. The pieces are huge and chunky, superb quality, and great for younger children who want a larger and more challenging puzzle than those for 1-2 year olds, but not with tiny pieces. This has 24 pieces and makes a 70x50cm picture of Muffin, Samuel, Rudy and Beaky on the Muffin Express train. Again, for 3 years and over, but my two-year-old has been making these Ravensburger floor puzzles (with a little help) since she was 20 months and can now do them on her own!

You can entertain your little one and exercise their brain very cheaply with these very reasonably priced activity books, which contain puzzles, games, colouring and more.

This is a great book of games and activities that will last and last - because it comes with a magic pen and wipe-clean pages, which means your child can complete the puzzles and games over and over again! Just use the brush on the pen to wipe the pages clean.

This annual from 2010 comes with lots of games and activities, from mazes to matching games, and also includes over 40 character stickers and 6 colouring pencils.

This lovely sticker book has around 60 colourful stickers of Muffin and friends, as well as mazes, spot the difference and matching games. The stickers can be used to complete the activities.

3rd and Bird Games

While there aren't many 3rd and Bird games available other than puzzles and a few online games, you can still find things for your little one to do by making up some themed 3rd and Bird games of your own!

3rd and Bird Snap or Matching Pairs
Find some pictured of 3rd and Bird characters online, resize so they all match, and print two of each picture onto card. Cut them out and use to play snap or matching pairs.

3rd and Bird Hide and Beak Game
Play a bird-themed version of hide and seek! You can pretend to be 3rd and Bird characters and hide in different "communitree" places, like behind trees or in a playhouse. How many 3rd and Bird hiding places can you think of? If you have any 3rd and Bird toys, or even just toy birds, you could hide them and play hunt the birdie! Alternatively, print out pictures of 3rd and Bird characters or different types of garden bird, and hide those.

3rd and Bird Treasure Hunt
Make like Beaky, Muffin and friends in the episode "Ahoy!" and have a treasure hunt! You could hide a 3rd and Bird present or treat for your little one to find. Make a 3rd and Bird treasure map of your house or garden, giving key landmarks or areas 3rd and Bird-themed names, and put a big X to mark the spot!
Or you could have treasure hunt clues instead. Depending on your child's age, you could have simply riddles, questions or rhymes about 3rd and Bird, or for older children you could have a series of clues based on questions about garden birds. Make each clue lead to the next, until eventually you reach the prize!

3rd and Bird Puppets and Puppet Theatre
Have fun making up stories and games with bird puppets! Print out the finger puppets from the Printables Pack download above, or print out some of the character colouring pages (adjust size to suit when printing) onto card, colour in and fix a lolly stick to the back to make puppets. You could also create a theatre out of a shoebox - colour, paint and decorate an empty box to create a 3rd and Bird tree scene, then cut a long slot along the back of the theatre base so that you can pop your puppets up inside and play!

3rd and Bird Activities

You can use 3rd and Bird to teach your children about birds, trees, nature, communities and much more. Integrating familiar characters into educational play and learning makes things fun and more likely to be taken on board!

Learn about Birds
Teach your little one about the birds in the garden. Point them out, tell them the different names. Look up familiar birds in a children's bird book. Point out nests and collect feathers. Show them lovebirds and other pet birds in garden centres and pet shops. If your child is old enough and you are willing to take on the responsibility, you could keep a bird such as a lovebird or budgie as a pet.

Feed the Birds
Teach your child the importance of caring for wildlife by involving them in feeding the birds. They can help you put seeds, nuts and fatballs out for the birds and watch them feeding. Don't forget to provide water for drinking and bathing too with a bird bath,
A feeder like this is a great idea for families because you can attach it to a window and children can watch birds eating up close!

Walk in the Woods
If you live nearby to woods, go for walks and have fun talking about the different trees, leaves, birds, wildlife and other aspects of nature that you come across. Ask questions like "Is this like Muffin's home?" or "Who do you think lives in this tree?"
Take leaves home to make leaf rubbings or pick some (common, not protected!) flowers and press them in a book. Take photos of any birds you see so that you can print them out and help your child make a bird scrapbook.
