4 Reasons Why Your Mattress Is Sagging
If you've noticed your mattress doesn't have the spring it used to, you're not alone. For consistently comfortable sleep, most people have to replace an average mattress every 6 - 8 years. Inexpensive innersprings, artificial foams...they all wear out eventually. Here are the top 4 reasons why your mattress might be sagging.
1. Low-density foams don't last.
Polyurethane foam density involves ranges of pounds of polyurethane per cubic foot of foam. The more polyurethane, the more dense the foam is, and the longer it lasts. Manufacturers often use less foam (and more air) to save on raw materials. But low-quality foams degrade quickly and result in sagging mattresses.
2. Air offers no support.
You know the soft, airy feel of some new mattress tops? If plush surface comfort is created using a thick filling of dacron, cotton or another stranded fiber, it's only the air between the strands that is providing that poofy "loft". After a few nights' sleep this air is compressed out, and a sag or "body impression" can begin to develop.
3. Coils lose their mojo.
Steel innersprings themselves don't usually sag, although over a long-enough period with enough force, the coils' rigidity will decrease.
4. Some manufacturers compromise on materials.
Since most mattresses are sewn shut, how do you know what's inside them? Inferior or unsupportive materials such as scrap cotton or flimsy foam can easily be substituted. Sleeper beware.
For durability, a natural latex mattress provides the longest life. It's supportive, pressure relieving, and can last up to 40 years. At Savvy Rest Organic Mattresses, we believe a mattress should provide good support for decades, even under very heavy use.
