If you are buying a 40th present for someone you don't really know very well then I would opt for going for an tried and tested present such as chocolates, flowers, alcohol or cuff-links for a male. To make a present more special then I would recommend spending a little more than you usually do for other birthdays. A cheap bottle of whiskey is no comparison to a gift of their person favourite single malt scotch whiskey.
