Do you know a 40 year old that's brave enough to wear this shirt. Ya gotta be a little cocky to pull this one off? Usually by the time you get to this age, you don't care much what anyone thinks of your clothes . . . at least if your a guy. Buying presents for that new 40 year old fella in your life can be a sensitive situation. By the time most guys get to that age, birthdays are becoming a non event. At least that's what they'll have you believe. Do they really mean it when they say they don't want a big 40th birthday surprise party, or is that just a front? Does forty seem really dreadful, or are they just pretending that it is? Maybe their pretending that it isn't. While no one can really know for sure, except the birthday boy himself, where I may be able to help out, is what to get the new "39 years old and holding" man as a gift. Parties we may not be all keen on, but everyone loves a present.

One thing to think about, is what interests, hobbies, and past times does Mr-Soon-To-Be-Fourty enjoy? This is usually not to hard to figure out, as it's all the stuff he spends his time doing, when he should be cutting the lawn, doing the taxes, or taking out the trash. You could go for a Super Bowl gift basket if he's a football fan. If he's a big coffee drinker, then how about a starbucks gift card. Even if he doesn't have a lot of extra circular activities, think about all the things he's talked about doing, but never seems to find the time to do. I always talked about scuba diving, but never really got around to doing it, until my wife signed me up for a scuba diving course one Christmas. Just before our winter vacation to Aruba. I did my classroom time in the great frozen north of Canada, and my open water dives in the 80 degree Caribbean waters of Aruba. One of the best gifts I ever received. Better than getting a BlackBerry car charger ;)

But, then again you know what? Maybe he really does want a big 40th birthday bash with a couple hundred or so of his closest friends. Even if he has said no a couple hundred times already, he will ultimately forgive you for showering him with so much attention, fun, and friends. Birthday parties (especially for old guys) are a ton of work, and only a total jerk wouldn't recognize and appreciate that after the fact. Go ahead, what's the worst that could happen.

If your a little unsure about a traditional party, there are a few alternatives. If he's a gambling man, how about a casino themed party. If there's a casino close by your neck of the woods, then this get's really easy. One not take him, and a dozen or so close friends for an evening or even weekend at the casino. There seems to be casinos all over the place these days, so finding one close shouldn't be too hard. A weekend full of black jack, roulette, slots, and Texas hold-em is many a guys dream. Of course, if you really want to splurge, send the whole gang to Vegas or Atlantic City. Be sure to get him a cheap wakeboards if there's a beach involved.

If you do opt for the gift as opposed to the party, don't go cheap. If there's one gift he should always remember, it's the one he got for his 40th. Unless of course you've got some reason to really annoy him. In that case, go for that tie or sweater you know he'll never wear. No need in saving those Christmas gifts for a special occasion.

Well, of course I would be negligent, if I didn't mention that tired old cliche, "It's the thought that counts". Of course nothing could be truer, and the fact that your brave enough to traipse around the internet looking for that perfect gift, does mean you given this lots of thought. And, whether that guy is your dad, husband, brother, or best mate, he's sure to appreciate the care you've put into celebrating his big 4-O. Believe it or not, guys are really not thoughtless jerks, we do notice the little stuff. We just don't like everyone to realize we do.
