Personal testimony of facial surgery
The following is a true personal testimony written by a good friend of mine, Bethany Lee, specifically for this article and with her full permission. She is keen to share her experiences with others who may read it.
I had cosmetic surgery some years ago - my first operation was for my eyes. I had very many creases around them and was unhappy with my appearance. I contacted an agent for cosmetic surgery, thinking about whole face surgery. After a discussion with her, she convinced me to start by having correction around my eyes. The operation I had was performed under local anaesthetic although this method isn't entirely suitable for many people as it is quite painful. It is possible to have it done under general anaesthesia, or 'twilight anaesthesia'. Some tie it in with other surgery such as a facelift procedure. Still, I opted for the local anaesthetic - I found it comforting to be able to talk to the surgeon and his nurse and know what was going on, but it is not for the faint hearted. The operation itself took about one and a half hours and I was able to have a cup of tea, don dark glasses and go home. I was given pain killers, antibiotics and eye ointment .
The painkillers were hardly needed. Although very bruised and swollen when I arrived home, my husband could see a remarkable difference in that the operation had completely removed my eye bags and wrinkles around the eyes. After the bruising and swelling finally went down (less than a week) the difference was amazing. I could see better and I looked so much younger. I was absolutely delighted. It set me off.
I was worried about my developing jowels. There was no doubt about it - the cosmetic surgery loomed. I contacted the same agent I had seen before, and she showed me how my face would look after surgery. This time I opted for a full face lift. The operation took 4 hours and this was done under general anaesthetic. I must admit I suffered a lot of bruising - more than most and it took about a week to settle down but after fortnight I was transformed. I found chewing sugar free dental gum useful, it helped me exercise my jaw and kept things moving. I looked better, felt better and started to look after myself more. It gave me the incentive to start exercising again. People were complimenting me on how well I looked. The incision lines were in well hidden places in my hair line and behind my ears, so there was no way anyone could actually tell that I had undergone surgery.
I was told the eye surgery would last 7 years but it is 15 years now and they still look good. Just a very slight wrinkling on the left side, which is easily correct with makeup. I have regularly used creams to keep my skin in the best possible condition. I know that people say that a cheap cream is as good as an expensive one but I refute that totally. I have bought most of the creams on the market and find that Syence is by far the most effective. This is one of the few creams that has scientifically documented proof that it thickens the skin - useful in the more mature lady! I find it invaluable, as it has kept my face very soft and near on wrinkle free.
Finally, I would say find a good cosmetic surgeon. Ask around, do not go for the cheapest or the most expensive - go for reputation. See photographs of his work if possible and ask questions. It's your money and your face - you have the right to demand the best. Naturally things can go wrong but rarely do and they can be put right. I find yoga is a great help as it keeps mind and body in tune. A good balanced diet of fresh organic fruit, vegetables and olive oil add to a healthy skin, which will always help set you on a good road to quick recovery.
You will experience a little pain but speak up and it can soon be eased. At the end of the day it will be worth it!

Today's cosmetic surgery seeks more than a good result. It also seeks to produce the result without leaving telltale tracts behind. This article will describe some of the ways I and other modern plastic surgeons accomplish that dual goal. I will discuss both facial and body contour procedures.
The most significant innovation in facial rejuvenation in the past several years has been the adaptation of endoscopic techniques. An endoscope is a surgical tool that incorporates a miniature video camera. It provides surgeons access to deeper layers with visualization of essential anatomy through minimal incisions. For example, the old forehead lift operation required a long incision across the top of the head from ear to ear. In my opinion, that operation has been made obsolete. I can do the endoscopic assisted forehead lift through small incisions, all hidden within the hair and provide the same benefits of forehead and brow area rejuvenation, all without removal of any scalp and therefore no hair loss. Not even your hairdresser need know.
The middle-third of the face is that part of the anterior cheek area below the eyes and above the lips. I perform mid-face lifts by combining the endoscopic forehead lift described above with an incision under the lip. I can then lift all layers together, and support them in place. The result is a more harmonious rejuvenation, including reduction in circles under the eyes, all without a single visible scar on the face.
Other areas of the face can also be improved without leaving any sign that you have had surgery, other than the fact that you look better. Lower eyelid fat bags can be removed from the inner, backside of the eyelid, leaving no scars. Jowl fat can be removed from inside the mouth. Cheek implants, which can have the effect of enhancing and balancing facial features as well as producing a more youthful look, are generally inserted through incisions under the lip inside the mouth. Double chins and poorly defined necklines can be recontoured with very small liposuction instruments passed through tiny incisions behind the earlobes and in the crease under the chin. Even neck muscle tightening can be done with only a slightly longer incision under the chin. The same approach is used for chin enhancement, using implants that I custom design to your particular need.
Another approach to facial contouring and rejuvenation is fat injection. Fat is harvested from your own body stores (like it or not, an almost inexhaustible resource), and prepared for reinjection. It is then used to fill in lines and wrinkles, correct hollows, and enhance structures such as cheekbones, jaw lines, and lips. Often, several sessions are needed to achieve the final result. The great attraction is that the material comes from your own body so that allergic reactions are impossible, the material (your own fat) is free, and the process uses needle injection so that surgical scars are avoided. Alternatively, there are permanent grafts that are well tolerated by the body that can also be implanted without leaving noticeable marks behind. I have had particularly good success in lip enhancement using one of these, made from a Gore-Tex material. A newer, softer version has now been released which studies show works even better.
Breast augmentation has reemerged as one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. An important decision is the location of the incision. I prefer to avoid a scar on the chest, for obvious reasons. My preference is the axillary incision, and I place the implant under the large pectoral muscle to obscure the upper margin of the implant. The final scar, which is high in the armpit, usually fades to a fine white line mimicking a natural skin fold. Other surgeons use the umbilical approach that also leaves the breast unscarred.
Recent statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Inc., once again shows that liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. One of the big attractions of liposuction from the very beginning has been the possibility of dramatic results and very small incisions that can be hidden within natural body creases, and covered by even the skimpiest clothing. This remains so today. Technology has improved and results are even better without sacrificing the possibility of no detectable scars.
The plastic surgery profession has always, with good reason, prided itself on its attention to detail and on minimizing scars. Our traditional, more extensive procedures, including major facelifts and tummy tucks, achieve these goals and are still the best choice in many cases. The newer techniques I have described above build on that tradition. We truly can achieve great results in a stealthy fashion.

It is also very important for a potential patient to do research on the surgeon that will be performing the procedure. There is a lot of money to be made in the cosmetic surgery industry, and all sorts of frauds and quacks are out to get a piece of action. With most things in life, it is important to remember that cheap prices mean cheap work, there is simply no way around it. Those looking for surgeons must choose wisely, or the results could be even more operations and even greater risks.
