Southeast Kentucky Coal Camp
Wayland was one of many Appalachian coal camps whose existence and livelihood were based entirely upon coal mining. The coal company owned the houses, the land and even the store. Wayland was incorporated as a sixth class city in ten years later 1923.

- My parents lived in Wayland many yrs ago. One of my grandfathers worked for C&O as a conductor, Van Jenkins, and the other grandfather ran the company store, JAmes E. Miller. Any info or family still there would be greatly appreciated.

- I love these old pictures of Wayland. I grew up there and have a lot of great memories in that little town. I loved playing in the old tipple and jumping up and down on the swinging bridge. I can still remember the smell of the oiled wooden floors in the school.
