Welcome To Valley City, Ohio
Valley City, Ohio is an old historic town. Technically, Valley City is what some would call a 'suburb' of Liverpool Township. Liverpool Township is the oldest established town in Medina County, and prior to the Revolutionary War was home to the Pottawatomie Indians.
If you like small town America where home is always in the heart, welcome to Valley City, Ohio - my old hometown. This is a view of the local post office.
Valley City History
In 1795 Valley City was part of the property of Daniel Coit of Connecticut, who advertised the land for sale. He was part of the Connecticut Land Company, which had bought the Connecticut Western Reserve for about 40 cents an acre. The Western Reserve was land set aside by the Continental Congress for payment of Revolutionary War Soldiers in lieu of wages.
The Settlers and The Potawatomi Indians
Friends of the Valley City Settlers
In 1807 Seba Bronson, Jr., a Revolutionary War Veteran, came from Columbia Township to the north, and "squatted" on the land. He planted corn, built a dwelling, and met the Pottawatomie Indians who came to the area to hunt.
The Indians had found a salt spring, which provided a useful way of preserving meat. They sold the location of the salt springs to Seba and a man named Capt. Jared Pritchard for 5 silver dollars. The word spread about the salt spring, and the town began to build. Part of that salt spring runs its course through my family's old farm.
From what I learned about the Indians, they were like the early settlers in a lot of ways. The warring Iroquois and Chippewas were always running them out of their homes. They were described as the most civilized, peaceful, and courteous of all the Indians in the area at the time. But they were untrusting of settlers (the settlers reminded them of the Iroquois with regard to land stealing), so they sided with the French and British during the early war years of our country.

My Visit To Myrtle Hill Cemetery
My recent visit to Myrtle Hill Cemetery was to trace town history.
The Old Myrtle Hill Cemetary

I grew up a few miles from the old Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Many of my classmates were decedents of the current residents of The Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The old cemetery has its legends . . . hauntings . . . ghosts . . . and other stories of lore.
But the reality of the cemetery is in its history. Many of the markers date back prior to the Civil War, and many helped found the town and created jobs for the people who lived here.
Myrtle Hill Cemetery Witches Ball
One of my old haunts . . .
In the late 1970s, my little brother and his friends thought it would be fun to go to The Myrtle Hill Cemetery at night to check out the ghost stories they heard and prove them to be fake. He talked me into going with them. There were five of us altogether, three with flashlights. We parked the car near the cemetery entrance and walked a little way up the hill. My brother's friends got a little brave and ran off into the grave yard. Then they started bantering, "We ain't afraid of no ghosts!," and kicked at a couple of headstones -- not to do damage, but to show their bravado.
At that point, I got a bad feeling about being there, and turned to my brother and told him I wanted no part of this. We went back to the car which was only a few feet away.
We were not in the car two minutes when the other three friends came running to the car mouths agape, wide eyed, and scared. The driver got behind the wheel and literally floored it backwards onto the road, rather than take the driveway out the exit. They claimed they were being chased.
Below are a few others who've been to Myrtle Hill.
