Male 46,XY Karyotype

Ranked #3,662 in Healthy Living, #66,931 overall

Explaining the Human Male Karyotype

The standard human karyotype (DNA makeup) is made up of 23 pairs of chromosomes, giving 46 chromosomes in total.

Human sex is determined by the final pair which is either XX or XY. A person with two X chromosomes is female; XY is male.

Karyotype is the technical term for the number of chromosomes. Other species have more or less than the human 46 chromosomes. Since gender is determined by a change in the final pair, a person's karyotype is said to be wither 46,XX or 46,XY.

Understanding Human Genetics

If you are new to genetics, or have forgotten what you were taught on school or college, you might like to brush up your knowledge with this lens which presents a series of animated videos which introduce genetics from the beginning.

Gender Determination and the Y Chromosome

By default we are female. That is only changed by a single gene, the SRY gene, on the Y chromosome. SRY stands for Sex-determining Region on the Y chromosome. This is explained in the video by David Page of the Whitehead Institute.

Genetic & Chromosomal Variations

A male isn't always XY; nor is somebody with an XY karyotype always male. Similarly, there is no one-to-one correspondence between XX and female. These lenses address some of the common variations.

Human Karyotype Posters

For educators, a karyotype poster can be a fantastic resource when introducing this topic. I've picked out a couple of my favourites. Both are available in a variety of sizes (smaller and cheaper than this big ones I have picked as the illustrations), so please click through and browse Amazon if I haven't picked out the size you would prefer.

Gender Testing

If karyotypes are mentioned in the mainstream media, it's usually in the context of gender testing, for instance when doubts surface over whether a sportswoman is really a woman. This is a complex area, but for an introduction I recommend my lens in gender testing.
