Holiday World and Splashin' Safari

Preceded Disneyland by nine years!

The Voyage wooden roller coaster at Holiday World in Santa Claus, IndianaHoliday World opened on August 3, 1946; it was founded by Louis J. Koch under the name Santa Claus Land. Holiday World was the first themed amusement park in the United States, preceding Disneyland by nine years. The park had rides and activities for children and their parents. It was a small park themed around Santa Claus and Christmas. The park still remembers Santa Claus with a large statue at the entrance of the park and also includes a large Christmas Tree and Nativity Scene as well.

In 1984, in order to appeal to a wider age group, the park expanded to include Halloween and Fourth of July sections, and the park's name was changed from Santa Claus Land to Holiday World to reflect the emphasis on additional holidays. Frightful Falls, a log flume ride, was added in 1984. As the park's name changed, so did the names of some of the rides, to reflect the new holidays. For example, the round-up ride called Arctic Circle became known as The Roundhouse in the new 4th of July section.

PointsettiaIn 1993, Splashin' Safari was added. The water park area initially included Crocodile Isle, a children's water-play area with some animal-themed water slides, an action river called Congo River, plus two large water slides. In 1994, a wave pool was added.

Holiday World gained national attention in 1995 when wooden roller coaster The Raven opened during the park's 50th season. It has been rated as the first, second, and third best wooden roller coaster on the planet by Amusement Today and Inside Track magazines.

Additional water slides and attractions were added to Splashin' Safari in the following years.

Information About Santa Claus, Indiana

Home of the world's only Santa Claus Post Office

Town of Santa Claus, INSanta Claus, Indiana, is a town located in Carter, Clay and Harrison townships, Spencer County in the southern portion of the state, between Interstate 64 and the Ohio River.

Santa Claus, Indiana, was established in 1854. In 1856, when the town was (then known as Santa Fe, pronounced "fee") working to establish a Post Office; the US Post Service refused their first application as there was already another Santa Fe, Indiana. Several town meetings were held, during which the name Santa Claus was selected.

The town has the world's only post office to bear the name of Santa Claus. Because of this popular name, the Post Office receives thousands of letters to Santa from all over the world each year. A group of volunteers known as "Santa's Elves" ensures each child receives a reply from Santa Claus; this tradition has been around since at least 1914. Every year, the Post Office also creates a special Christmas 'hand cancellation' pictorial postmark for use during the month of December. This practice attracts mail from all over the world wishing to have the official Santa Claus postmark. The pictorial postmark is chosen each year from submissions from art students at the local high school.

Santa with his reindeerSanta Claus is currently home to approximately 2,200 residents. According to the 1990 census, 927 people resided in Santa Claus. By 2000 the town's population had grown to 2,075. A majority of Santa Claus residents live within the gated community of Christmas Lake Village, which was first established in the late 1960s by Bill Koch. It consists of 2,500 acres developed around three lakes: Christmas Lake, Lake Holly, and Lake Noel. The street names in Christmas Lake Village are all themed and named after the Christmas season. Many residents also live in Holiday Village, a subdivision on the north side of town.

Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led nonprofit that encompasses over 20 different teams and programs. They send letters, care packages, and comfort items to deployed American service members, and we support their families here at home.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to Soldiers Angels from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.
