Why Airguns?
Airguns the gun of the future?
Airguns have come along way since the Red Rider days they are now pinpoint accurate rifles and pistols able to take targets and animals out to 100 yards and sometimes slightly beyond. The challenge and fun airguns present is the reason they attract so many. They are safe for backyard shooting where a firearm might not be and can allow year round indoor practice.
On this page you will find information on great videos and links that i have discovered in my adventure in airguns.
I hope you enjoy!
Choosing a airgun.
FPE is king! Forget velocity.
Just a short introduction into choosing a airgun for pest control or hunting.First let me say there is no one perfect airgun for pest control/hunting. You also need to know that some airguns are not up to the challenge accuracy wise and lack enough knockdown power to humanly take pests and quarry alike.
Now when we talk about airgun power i am not talking about velocity, this can get you in trouble here with most manufactures advertising there latest and greatest 1400fps air rifle and consumers think "Wow that must be one powerful gun!" WRONG, what they dont tell you is that they shot that using a super light pellet which weighs next to nothing so its foot pounds of energy(fpe) is nothing.
The easy way to explain it is this would you rather get hit by a ping pong ball going 200mph or a bowling ball going 50mph, the lighter pellet goes faster but dosent do any damage, so what you need here is a airgun that can push those heavier pellets at greater speeds generally 12ft/lbs is the lower end of what is considered humane out to about 30 yards.
With all that said it really comes down to preference and price range you can spend as little as $100-$2000,.
Spring guns will get you in releteviely cheap at around $100-$600
PCP(Pre Charged Pneumatics) $300-$2000
My personal choice is below.
Benjamin Discovery Rifle & Pump Air Rifle
My recommendation to new airgunners.
This airgun is one of may favorites i originally started off with a $600 spring gun (RWS 460 Magnum) which is and always will be a great gun, but it was heavy and cocking it all the time whether pest control or hunting got old fast.
I then got this air rifle the Benjamin Discovery with pump in .22 cal. It was a world of difference 30 shots and all i had to do was cycle the bolt and drop in a pellet. You do have to pump it with a external pump takes about 40 strokes to get it full from 1000psi to 2000psi(max). But that doesn't take long and you can just buy the gun without a pump(cheaper) and get a scuba tank and adapter to fill it with it you dont feel like pumping(great tanks on E-Bay).
It has lots of power easily capable of taking small game, its also accurate i can shoot dime size groups at 40 Yards and i'm not a very good shooter. This air rifle also has power i am getting 22 FPE (foot pounds energy) from this shooting Crosman .22 cal 14.3 grain pellets.

I have taken squirrel and rabbits with this rifle as far out as 50 yards without a problem, i would recommend a good scope at this range though and practice as shot placement is key as it is in most hunting and pest control.
With the items i have listed below and a little practice you will be amazed at the results you get from this superb little rifle.

Airgun Reporter Review of Benjamin Discovery
Great air gun video review.
Here is a great review of the Benjamin Discovery Air Rifle, this is one of the reviews that sold me on this little airgun.

Scuba Tank for Benjamin Rifle
Instead of getting a pump you can get a scuba tank and adapter.
Another recommendation is to get a scuba tank for your Benjamin Discovery Air Rifle.
Ebay has by far the best prices and sizes you would want (3000 PSI 80 cu ft).
With the Benjamin Discovery you should get around 100 fills before you would need to take it to your nearest dive shop to get it filled($5-$10)
It will also need a hydro test every 5 years but your dive shop can assist you with that. It is definately on of the best investments you can make for your PCP airgun

- I've been wanting to get into air rifle and pistol shooting. Do you have any recommendations for good semi-automatic air pistols that could be kept in a ready-to-fire state for an extended period of time? I plan to get back into long distance biking and would like a small bit of protection on me.

- Airgun would not do much to protect you(not unless you carried a large bore) i would go no smaller than a 9mm Ruger makes a great gun the SR9c that is great to carry.
