4 Original Poems

Poetry can be a powerful form of self expression as well as a terrific means for a writer to pour out emotions.

Sometimes they are written in jest and just for fun while other times they come directly from the heart. They can run the full range of emotions and make you laugh, smile, or cry.

In this lens you will find four original poems penned by me. I hope you'll take the time to read them and perhaps add a few words of your own.

Sunset

U.S. Public Domain

Sunset
There is no denying its beauty
And yet with the light going
And the chill of night approaching
I dread the darkness
The light does not go out
But leaves to shine for someone else
Its beauty lost to me
And given to another
Enclosed in shadows
I am uncertain of the dawn
And weary of the blackness
That promises to cover me
Unable to capture the light
And not fast enough
To make the horizon in time
I fear that I can only watch
As it slips away
And leaves me in its absence

Sadness Came To Visit

Joshua Veitch-Michaelis - Dead flowers, Pére Lachaise Cemetery

Sadness came to visit
When Love was on the road
He came within
To find for him
A comfortable abode

With the mansion empty
And Love safely away
Sadness to his liking
Moved right in
And meant to stay

He went into the garden
And tore up all the flowers
To leave behind
A wilted mess
Was well within his powers

With a gleeful laugh
And wrathful ease
As black as pitch
Upon the walls
He painted his disease

And there within he dwelled
In all of that decay
Ruling from a squatters throne
Because Love
She was away

Frozen

U.S. Public Domain

Frozen in the blackest night
Icy and without the light
A cold felt not just on the surface
Both solid and devoid of purpose
Lying in frigid repose
And covered by the constant snows
It takes a certain kind of heat
To melt the stone, to make it beat
And without that warm impact
It will remain an artifact

Love and Hate

Chinese character for hate

They exist
A beat apart
Together tied
Like life and art

Forever made
To fuel each other
When Love is lost
You'll meet her brother

A gentle touch
A cold steel cage
A warm embrace
Explosive rage

Like air and water
Intertwined
When you've found your cloud's not
Silver lined

Like checkers they
Replace each other
And trade freely
You'll discover

When Love walks out
And leaves the throne
The mirror of her
Flesh and bone

Will take her place
To rule the court
For him this is but
Easy sport

To wear the crown
He's never late
You'll grow to know
Love's brother Hate

It's good that you posted your own work, too often people just supply poetry or links by others. Your poems have strong emotions but also a rather dark tone. Do you also write poetry that expresses upbeat ideas?

I do on occasion but these four happened to come from the same place.

In addition to writing shorts stories I pen the occasional poem. Here are a few expressive ones for your reading.
