How do I get started?

Regular exercise will help protect you from chronic disease, improve your mood and lower your chances of injury. The older you are, the more you have to gain from exercise. All it takes is 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

If you can only start with five minutes of walking, then that's what you should do.

One of my favorite plans to recommend for getting started is the five-minutes-out, five-minutes-back.

Just like it sounds, you walk out for five minutes, turn around, and walk back. That's it...10 minutes of walking, and off you go about your day.

WHAT WIKIPEDIA SAYS ABOUT SENIOR FITNESS

Physical fitness is used in two close meanings: general fitness (a state of health and well-being) and specific fitness (a task-oriented definition based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations).

Physical fitness is the functioning of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and muscles to function at optimum efficiency. In previous years, fitness was defined as the capacity to carry out the day's activities without undue fatigue. Automation increased leisure time, and changes in lifestyles following the industrial revolution meant this criterion was no longer sufficient. Optimum efficiency is the key. Physical fitness is now defined as the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations. Fitness can also be divided into five categories: aerobic fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

MANY SENIORS BECOME LESS FIT...

Due to Lack of Training, Not Just Aging

Senior make quick improvements when they start exercise

We all probably know of at least one senior citizen who seems to defy the laws of aging and remains in top physical shape well beyond their peers. We also tend to dismiss this person as genetically gifted or just unusual. However, research, and more and more seniors, are showing us that this doesn't have to be the case. Many of the declines in fitness with age are due to lack of use, not just the normal aging process.

While it's true that as we age we have to work harder than the young, a lot of the declines that we attribute to aging may be reversed with fitness training.

About DMedley

I was born in the mountains of Oregon in the middle of the 20th century. As a young man living in a world that had little of the physical distractions of life, I learned at an early age to use my imagination.

Reading and imagination were my main tools for enjoyment. In later years this proved to be a valuable asset as well as a curse. I developed a mind that never seemed to be satisfied and always searching for something new and exciting.

I am a person of many interests as most people are. Here I would like to share a few of those interest with you and hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
