This book is set up in to 2 parts.

Part one is What You Need to Know About Healthy Digestion and includes the following chapters:
Introducing the Four-Week Plan for Healthy Digestion
Diarrhea
Constipation
Heartburn and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Dyspepsia
Celiac Sprue
Diabetes
For Women Only
Communicating with Your Doctor

Part 2 is Healthy Digestion Recipes and includes recipes for the following:
Recipes to Improve Diarrhea Symptoms
Recipes to Improve Constipation Symptoms
Recipes to Improve GERD Symptoms
Recipes to Improve Dyspepsia Symptoms
Recipes to Improve Celiac Sprue Symptoms
Recipes to Improve Multiple Conditions (each recipe tells what it helps with)

I feel this is a book for everyone. Also, a book that everyone should keep on their shelf for current and future reference.

In chapter one you learn how to make a 4 week food log. There is a page to copy for your own food log as well as sample food logs to show you how to fill it out. You eat normally the first week, making note of what you ate, what time, and what symptoms, if any, occur. Weeks2-4 you start to eliminate foods to see how you do. You also add foods that are suggested for your symptoms.

I was surprised when I got heartburn while eating Ritz crackers. If it weren't for reading the book, I wouldn't have thought much about it. I learned why when I lay on my right side at night my acid reflux is really bad, but when I lay on my left side it is much better. When laying on your right side your stomach higher so the acid backs up. Laying on your left side the stomach is lower.

I learned that overall I have a fairly balanced diet as far as the foods that cause, or prevent both diarrhea and constipation. That made me feel better. I know that I can't have certain things, like my Dr. Pepper, right before going to bed. This has really eased my acid problem.

Another thing I enjoy about the book is that Dr. Greenberger has actual stories of patients he has helped throughout the book. I like this because you then know that you aren't alone. It also shows the importance of communicating with your doctor.

I was fortunate to be able to be in a live chat with the author, Dr. Greenberger. He answered a lot of questions. Although all questions that were asked in the chat, are answered in the book, it was nice to have them backed up. I think we all learned a lot.

I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but there are several that I do want to try.

Personal Statement
My investigative interests have been in the field of intestinal malabsorption, pancreatic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatitis C. However, I consider my major expertise to be in translating important advances in gastroenterology to materials that can be used by clinicians. In this regard, I edited the Gastroenterology Section of the YearBook of Medicine for almost 30 years and was founding Editor of the YearBook of Digestive Diseases. I hope to bring to the Board some fresh approaches to difficult clinical problems, and I hope that such information proves valuable to practicing physicians.
