Off-Roading, My New Found Hobby

First of all I'd like to thank you for visiting my lens. This is all about Off-Roading. I'm fairly new to the whole concept but have had friends tell me how much fun it is. I've looked into it a little bit and decided to give it a shot. I live in a rural area in Oklahoma and there are plenty of places around here to do a little Off-Roading. I live on a farm about 15 miles from the nearest town and decided I needed a good 4x4 even to get me to town sometimes. I found a couple of old trucks we had and started looking into fixing one up for my own 4 wheeling fun.

My Truck

So here is my 1993 Ford F-250 5.8L 4x4. Currently, the clutch is shot but that is the only major obstacle. I plan on swapping it out and then getting down to the Off-Roading upgrades.

Lift Kit

My first upgrade will be a custom lift kit. I'm first adding one full leaf to the set and then cutting another into about 6" pieces to use as a body lift. It's pretty simple to do. After removing the U-bolts just separate the axle from the old leaf set. Add in the new leaf and drill holes in the filler pieces and tie them all back in together. It will add about 4" total.

Tires

My next upgrade is a set of tires. I found an old set that we had laying around and I think they'll work just fine. This is a very important factor in Off-Roading. It's important to put a good set of tires on.

The Experience

While the vehicle is obviously a very important factor in the Off-Road experience, it's also very important to know some crucial techniques. There are many tips and tricks out there to get the most out of your ride. I didn't really have a clue as what to expect when I started, so I took a look at Thrandur Arnthorsson "4x4 Off Roads." It taught me everything I needed to know about Off-Roading and this is the reason why I enjoy it as much as I do. I strongly suggest you take a look at this.

Mudding

Mudding involves finding a large area of wet mud or clay and attempting to drive as far through it as possible without becoming stuck. The stock tires supplied with four by four vehicles are typically inadequate for this type of off-roading and Mud-terrain tires are required. Strongly attached recovery points are also recommended to enable the vehicle to be towed out if it becomes bogged down. Traction and momentum are important factors in success.

Rock Crawling

Rock crawling is a highly technical category of off-roading. Vehicles are typically modified with larger than stock tires, suspension components that allow greater axle articulation, and changes in the differential gear ratio in order to provide the ideal high torque/low speed operation for traversing obstacles. It is common for a rock crawler to have a "spotter" - an assistant who will go on foot alongside of or in front of the vehicle to provide information to the driver on obstacles or areas of terrain that the driver may be unable to see.

Dune Bashing

Dune bashing involves driving over sand dunes, frequently associated with tourism in the Middle-East. There are also many state parks in the United States that allow ORVs to drive on them including the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan and the Imperial Sand Dunes in California.
