5 Cheap Ways To Survive Insomnia!

Ranked #9,629 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #128,455 overall

What To Do?

I am an insomniac myself and so I know how it feels to be up all night. If nothing else, it is boring. Incredibly boring. Sometimes it feels like there's nothing to do because everyone else is asleep (if you live with others) or you are alone (if you don't live with others). So I'm sharing a list of my five favorite things to do when I can't sleep.

One Isn't The Lonliest Number

It is true that being an insomniac can often mean being awake all by yourself often. So when you want to do something you have to find things to do that work with only one person. There are a million games out there but they typically require more people, and the ones that you can play by yourself, mainly computer games, can cost a fortune.
So that leaves the problem - Spend a lot of money on a one-player game or lay in bed doing nothing the entire night. But I have discovered over the years a few inexpensive ways to spend your time alone.
Counting down from most expensive to least expensive, I will share with you my favorite cures to the boredom of insomnia.

#5. MOVIES

Movies & TV Shows

Movies are a great way to spend a night when you can't sleep. I do it all the time, put on my favorite show until I can finally drift off. I don't have a single favorite so I'll share five of my favorites. All of the shows listed below are under $20!

#4. PUZZLES

Noah's Arc In 1,000 Pieces

MasterPieces / Collector Suitcase 1000-piece Puzzle, Noah's Ark

Amazon Price: $10.50 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

An amazing way to spend your time. It is both challenging and fun. I completed this very puzzle with my 8-year old sister this month and we both had a blast. It is 1,000 pieces so don't expect to finish it quickly, but I believe that is partly what makes it so great. It took us about a week to finish this, working on it a bit each night. And once you have it complete you have a magnificent picture, should you glue the pieces together and frame it as we did. Or you can simply take it apart to work on another time. Whatever your option, this is a fun choice.

Challenge Yourself

I've been doing puzzles since I was a little tot and I can assure you that there are puzzles for every age and mind. Beneath I linked a few for you. There is the challenging 1,000 piece puzzle of air balloons. If that is not your cup of tea try the 500 piece puzzle of Ravensburger. Still too much? I even included a couple 50 piece puzzles for your entertainment. And when you're done...DO THEM AGAIN! Or, if you'd rather, glue the puzzle once you are done and hang them up on your wall to show everyone.

Maybe you don't like everything on my list...But maybe you'll find something that entertains you.

1. Find something that looks good for you.
2. HAVE FUN

#2. BOOKS

Mary Shelly's Frankenstein

This is a book I first read when I was fourteen years old and I still read it to this day. The book that started all the movies and TV shows and books about Frankenstein.

Frankenstein (Enriched Classics (Washington Square))

Amazon Price: $1.05 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

One of the classics. Frankenstein has been a legend in the realm of monsters. Have you ever wondered where he came from? Many films and books since have portrayed this story, but none can quite duplicate what Mary Shelly has created.

#1. PLAYING CARDS!

The cheapest and most widely used form of entertainment out there.

Playing Cards

There are literally hundreds of single player card games out there. One simple pack of cards can last you forever, and give you hours after hours of entertainment. And once you think you've run out of card games you can play by yourself JUST MAKE ONE UP!

So There You Have It.

I have now given you my five favorite and most inexpensive things to do when my insomnia comes to life at night and I just can't get myself to sleep.
Hopefully one of the many things listed above will help you out too.

Broke?

Me Too

Due to the amount of comments I'm getting with more suggestions that are FREE I've decided to compile them.

By far, the number one suggestion by you readers is Squidoo! Free and easy. Just go over your published lenses and see if there's anything you can do to improve them. Or maybe you have a new idea for a lens. Or if making a lens is not your thing, then just exploring Squidoo, reading other people's lenses is fun.

Another comment suggested the classic counting sheep. I've tried that and it doesn't work for me personally, but apparently it does work for some people. If you've never tried it then give it a shot. Nothing to lose and it just may work.

The last suggestion I'm posting is taking a hot bath. I've never done that but I've had friends tell me that it helps. Maybe it will for you too.

Good luck! I hope these suggestions help.

Good for you - I would go for the books, puzzles and movies, but would always prefer the sleep above all else.
