Consider the Greyhound Breed

How to Choose Dog Toys for Greyhounds

greyhound

What is a greyhound born to do? What is the nature of this breed of dog?

In the wild, generations back, the greyhound would run, chase, hunt in a pack of other hounds, speed across the open savannah after small prey... take apart the captured critter... eat... then sleep.

There's the clue.

The perfect dog toys for a greyhound gift are those that remind him of prey.

AKC Large Stuffed Rabbit

A Soft Dog Toy - Prey Item!

You saw this one coming...

American Kennel Club's AKC-approved stuffed bunny is soft and cute and fairly realistic - it's almost like they had a greyhound in mind when this toy was designed. Good quality, too. Actually, I wouldn't mind having one of these for myself.

Greyhounds love stuffed toys of any kind, and a greyhound with a stuffed rabbit toy is just classic.

Squeaky Tennis Balls

Dog Toys to Chase

Squeaky tennis balls are very popular around here, both with the hounds and with the humans. They're small enough to tuck into a pocket, ready to play a game of fetch at a moment's notice - or, in the case of greyhounds, to play a game of "you throw the ball and I'll chase it and grab it and run mad high-speed circles around you as I chomp down on my trophy and enjoy the squeaking noise it makes." Greyhound owners, you know exactly what I'm talking about here!

These are not chew toys, let it be said up front, so do supervise play. Also, squeaky tennis balls can be punctured by a pointy canine tooth, so the squeaker stops working. When the squeaker stops working, most greys will lose all interest... which is when you can pass the non-squeaking tennis balls off to a less demanding dog, like your friendly neighborhood Lab.

KONG Air Dog Squeakair Tennis Balls Dog Toy, Medium, Yellow, 3/pack

Amazon Price: $2.87 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

Squeaky tennis balls are great fun for a greyhound to chase; they're small enough to easily fit the greyhound's narrow jaw; and they make irresistable squeaking noises when they're captured and carried around in triumph - a real winner!

Wild Rope Dog Toys

Your Greyhound's Hunting Drive at Play

Rope toys in general are a good choice for greyhounds, as they are easy for them to get those narrow muzzles latched onto and are great for use in training the all-important "leave it" command. I like the Dog Toy Tag Rope Ball because it really keeps a greyhound's interest, with lots of floppy bits that flap around when you toss the ball. Some of the pieces make an intriguing crackling noise, too, which will make those little rosette ears perk right up!

One caveat, though - this particular toy is not suitable for leaving with your dog, as some of it has stuffing which a determined chewer can remove and may ingest. I'd supplement this one with a couple of basic knotted rope toys for when you can't supervise closely enough to let your grey play with the Tag Rope Ball.

Pet Stages Rag Rope Ball

Amazon Price: $6.57 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

All the flopping-around bits of the Tag Rope Ball are deeply interesting to a playful greyhound, and I like that it can double as a throw toy for the greyhound with a strong chase instinct who prefers to chase down his toys rather than simply find them lying around.

No-Stuffing Plush Dog Toys

A Safer Kind of Stuffies

For greyhounds who like to get right down to ripping the stuffing out of their stuffed toys before you can leap to the rescue - consider an unstuffed toy. Skinneeez is one brand we like, but there are two or three others just as good.

The ever-popular unstuffed toy comes in a variety of animal characters (I'm trying hard to resist the skunk) and in a couple of different sizes. The 24-inch one is, I'd say, the ideal size for a greyhound's toy - he can have loads of fun flipping it into the air and stepping on it as he drags his prize around.

Ethical Plush Skinneeez Fox 24-Inch Stuffingless Dog Toy

Amazon Price: $4.13 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Great for greyhounds who are talented at un-stuffing a stuffed toy in no time flat, Skinneeez plush toys don't have any stuffing in them at all, so Mom and Dad don't have to worry about the toy's innards getting eaten if they turn their back for two seconds. Floppy and fun for the dog, and easy enough to tuck one in your bag or pocket to entertain your greyhound when you're out visiting.

Kong Wobbler

Food-Dispensing Dog Toys are Great for Greyhounds Home Alone

From a dog's perspective, what's not to like about the Kong Wobbler?

You paw at the toy and it wobbles wildly all around in unpredictable directions, dispensing yummy treats all over the floor. Hours of fun!

Now, with a greyhound who is relatively fresh off the track and still in that "spaced out" state of mind in his new home, expect the Kong Wobbler to be a bit alarming to him. My tip - put a dab or two of peanut butter on it, and he'll soon get interested! Easy to wash, and a very durable "interactive feeding puzzle" your greyhound will come to love.

Kong Wobbler Dog Toy

Amazon Price: $8.49 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

If your greyhound gets bored at home while you're at work, the Kong Wobbler is often a wonderful solution. It's wobbly food-dispensing fun to keep the dog from looking for ways to "get in trouble" by entertaining himself... like playing with your best shoes.

What's your Greyhound's favorite dog toy?

Those are some great ideas! My grey happens to most enjoy the non-stuffed animal toys that have a velcro opening to put squeakers in!! They're made by Kong, and when a squeaker looses it's squeak, you can just replace it, and the puppy thinks it's a whole new toy. Genius!

Oh, I know the ones you mean - a grey friend of ours has the Beaver, too cute!
