What is "Cloud Hosting?"

According to Wikipedia, "The phrase "cloud computing" originated from the cloud symbol that is usually used by flow charts and diagrams to symbolize the internet. The principle behind the cloud is that any computer connected to the internet is connected to the same pool of computing power, applications, and files. Users can store and access personal files such as music, pictures, videos, and bookmarks or play games or use productivity applications on a remote server rather than physically carrying around a storage medium such as a DVD or thumb drive. Almost all users of the internet may be using a form of cloud computing though few realize it. Those who use web-based email such as Gmail or Hotmail instead of receiving mail on their computer with Outlook or Entourage are the most common examples of such users."

Essentially, cloud hosting is storing your data (email, files, etc) remotely via the web, rather than downloading it locally to store it on your computer or other hardware device. As the above quote points out, web-based email users are using "cloud computing" for their communication via email!

Google Apps

An Improved Alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server

Google AppsGoogle Apps is an exciting and highly effective alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server. If you own a small to mid-sized business, it is a dream come true. Are you already familiar with Google's awesome services such as Gmail and Google Docs & Spreadsheets? Well, I have good news for you. Those are the exact products that make up Google Apps, and they work together to completely replace traditional office suites that require software and hardware or licensing. Am I really claiming that Google Apps can effectively replace all of the software and most of the hardware that your business runs on? Absolutely! Google Apps for businesses allows users to customize these already familiar applications and run them under your own website domain. The best news is that the cost is probably significantly less than what you pay to run your business using traditional software and applications. So what do you think? Are you ready to Go Google? Given the info I have just shared, I think it's at least worth doing a little research, don't you?

5 Reasons to Host in the Cloud

  • 1Your information and files are accessible from anywhere in the world --- all you need is a computer with internet to access them. No more losing files or data that was only saved locally, or losing important info saved on physical device that was damaged.
  • 2Cloud hosting is more cost effective, since most services only charge you for the amount of time you actually use --- no more and no less.
  • 3The majority of cloud hosting services guarantee an impressive 99.9% uptime, so you don't have to worry about any disruptions in your business operations.
  • 4Improved scalability by reducing your businesses in-house IT.
  • 5No need for dedicated servers and more convenience when sharing or collaborating with remote team members.

Nice lens, I can see the benefits of cloud hosting but it would be interesting to hear some of the disadvantages. For example, if Google servers collapse for a couple of hours you wouldn't have access to your info/Web site.
