5 Reasons Why We Love Memory Foam Mattresses

Many of our customers who are looking to purchase their first memory foam mattress start off a bit confused about memory foam and are not sure if it will be the right option for them. This is a common problem that is made more complicated by the myriad ways memory foam mattresses are marketed by retailers. We want to make things easier and a bit simpler, so we have come up with this list of the top 5 reasons memory foam is a good choice for just about everyone. Hopefully it will help making your decision easy, but if not, give us a call and we will be glad to talk about it some more!

Lying on a Memory Foam Mattress

1. Your Spine is Correctly Aligned

Proper spine alignment is probably the most important reason a memory foam mattress will be a great choice for you. Your body heats the foam, which then softens, becomes malleable, and conforms to the shape of your body while you sleep. As a result, your body will gently sink into the mattress. As this happens your body will naturally find the ideal position to lie in, whether that be on your side, front, or back. This ideal position is one in which your spine is properly aligned.
Naturally, your spine has a double-S shape, and if you rest for a long period of time with your spine in another shape, like when you are asleep, you might find aches and pains as routine as your morning cup of tea (but much less enjoyable).
If you are already too familiar with back pain or if you want to take preventative steps to avoid it, a mattress with memory foam might be just the thing you're looking for.

2. It Relieves Pressure Points

One of the other benefits you will enjoy from sinking into your mattress is the way it will relieve pressure on your body. When you lie down on a pocket sprung mattress, especially the traditional open coil type, you might notice pressure building up in your joints (especially your knees, hips, and shoulders). This can be very uncomfortable and somewhat incapacitating, especially for people who already suffer from arthritis.
Think of the weightless feeling you experience when you are floating in a swimming pool just below the surface; this feels so comfortable because there is comparably little pressure being exerted on all parts of your body. As the mattress moulds to your body and you softly sink in, a similar effect will be experienced. You won't feel as weightless as an astronaut, but you will feel like you are lightly suspended. This is naturally a favourable state for your body to be in; after all, this is basically how the womb works letting a baby's body develop with minimal external pressure.

3. It is Hypoallergenic and Dustmite Resistant

While it is possible to get hypoallergenic pocket sprung and open coil mattresses, they have to be treated with a substance that renders them hypoallergenic. Thanks to its high density, memory foam is naturally hypoallergenic. The foam is too tightly packed for tiny things like bed bugs and dust mites to thrive and multiply in, so they don't go on to create allergens that can trigger allergic reactions in both children and adults. The density also stops dust and other irritating microscopic particles from building up and spreading around the way they can in a sprung mattress.
This makes memory foam an ideal choice for every member of your family and can help you have a simple thing that is unfortunately hard to come by in a young family: a quiet night in which everyone sleeps straight through until morning.

4. No "Roll-together" Effect

While your entire family can benefit from all the advantages of memory foam, it can also do wonders for couples that share a bed. Since everyone is built differently, in most couples there is likely to be a difference in size. One of your is probably taller than the other and one of you is probably heavier. If this is true for you and your partner, you must have noticed that while sleeping on a traditional open coil mattress that you tend to "roll together" in the night and both end up squished in the middle of the mattress. This happens because when pressure is applied on one of the springs in an open coil mattress all the others react. If one of you is heavier, all the springs will be drawn toward the spot where the heavier person is lying causing the lighter person to "roll" toward the other. This can put a serious strain on both the quality of your sleep and of your relationship.
With a memory foam mattress, this doesn't happen. When you each lie on your respective sides of the bed, you will each independently sink into the mattress. The memory foam only reacts to the pressure and heat applied to it directly. It will contour to the shape of each of your bodies, so it will almost feel like you are each sleeping on your own mattress.

5. It is Durable

One common concern about memory foam is that since it contours to your body shape it may become warped and loose its ability to bounce back, leaving you with a body-shaped groove and a lumpy, uncomfortable mattress soon after you bought it. This is simply not true. It is the heat of your body that the polyurethane that comprises the memory foam reacts to. When you get out of bed, the heat source (your body) is removed and the particles lack the catalyst that is necessary to make them more malleable. As it cools down, the bed will return to its natural shape. This process can be repeated over and over again and means that you will get years of use out of your memory foam mattress. This long life and durability make memory foam a wise investment. However, memory foam is not invincible. Like anything else, it will deteriorate over time but not in the same way and nowhere near as quickly as springs lose their elasticity.
