5 Steps to De-Cluttering Your Home with Self Storage
Ranked #22,111 in Home & Garden, #334,154 overall
If your garage, basement, attic, or spare closets are overwhelmed with household goods that you don't use often but don't want to discard, self storage may be for you. Using self storage is an ideal solution when de-cluttering your home because it is a cost-effective way of storing your items in a secure environment without having to use valuable space in your home.
Round it Up - Before you begin hauling away that clutter to your nearest self storage unit, you'll want to first gather all the household items you'd like to get out of your home. Those things may include seasonal items like holiday decorations, snow equipment, and swimming pool accessories; bulky keepsakes like old toys, quilts, or a VHS tape or book collection; and items you keep for occasional overnight guests, like spare mattresses and extra seating.
Let it Go - If you can pare down the amount of stuff you want to get out of your home, you'll be able to minimize how much will have to go into self storage, meaning you can rent a smaller storage unit and save money. Once you discard the items you no longer want, you'll get a better idea as to how much storage space you'll ultimately need.
Get it Organized - Now is a good opportunity to pack your smaller items away into boxes and crates for easier storage in the unit. Be sure to clearly label any boxes and crates so you know what's inside them once they're packed in your self storage unit.
Size it Up - After eliminating all the items you won't need to store, you'll want to measure approximately how much space your items will take up in a storage unit. One simple way to determine this is to stack and arrange your items as they'll be in the storage unit and then measure the width and length of floor space they consume; multiply the width times length, in feet, to arrive at an approximate square-footage figure.
Move 'em Out - After you've decided which self storage facility you're going to use and are ready to rent your unit, it's time to prepare your items for storage There are many reliable moving services available if you'd like to have somebody haul your items to your self storage unit for you. You may also decide to move your items on your own or with the help of some friends. Buying pizza and playing music during the packing and unloading process may create the fun, inviting atmosphere necessary to convince your friends to help you move your items into storage.
Once your items have been safely packed away in a self storage unit, you'll be able to reclaim space in your garage, basement, attic, and closets and enjoy having more breathing room in your home.
