5 Things to Do if you Hate Valentine's Day

Turn the Holiday into Something Positive

I have never liked Valentine's Day. OK, that's not quite true. I did like it when I was in elementary school and we got to decorate lunch bags with heart-shaped paper doilies and give out little Valentine cards to all of our classmates, but once I got into Junior High the appeal quickly wore off. The whole thing always seemed to be nothing more than an artificial, commercial farce. In the 23 years I have been married, my husband and I have never celebrated Valentine's Day by exchanging cards or gifts. Valentine's Day can be especially depressing for singles who are already feeling lonely and left out. It is hard to ignore when everywhere you go, you are hit in the face with pink and red hearts and ads for Valentine's candy, flowers, jewelry, and lingerie.

An anti-valentine's day movement has sprung up in recent years, but the bitter, spiteful attitude often associated with it doesn't appeal to me any more than buying someone a useless gift because Hallmark told me to. People may see anti-valentine's day as a way to express their righteous indignation at being dumped or getting revenge on their ex, but I wouldn't give it the negative energy. I'm not against love. Love should be celebrated 365 days a year! I would prefer to simply pay no attention to the annoying holiday and do something positive. Here are some suggestions for meaningful things to do if you hate Valentine's Day. Spread your love around to people and places who will really appreciate it!

1. Volunteer Doing Community Service

Helping handsThere are countless organizations that need help and would be extremely grateful for you to volunteer. Homeless shelters, soup kitchens, nursing homes, libraries, schools, animal shelters, your local Humane Society... the list is endless.

2. Donate Blood

Donate BloodIt's not as scary as it sounds. Blood donations are desperately needed all the time, and are a way to truly save lives. To be a blood donor you must be in good health, 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. There are some eligibility restrictions due to health conditions, pregnancy, international travel and use of prescription drugs. Please visit the American Red Cross or Foundation for America's Blood Centers websites to learn more.

3. Plant a Tree

Deforestation is a world-wide problem, and planting trees is an excellent way to help the environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, reduce soil erosion and provide shade and shelter for birds and animals. If you can't plant an actual tree, you can donate to organizations such as Plant a Billion Trees and Arbor Day Foundation

4. Donate to a Food Bank

Food bankInsufficient access to food is more common than you might think, and it is not limited to the homeless. Many working families don't have enough to eat on a regular basis, especially in rural areas. When you are doing your routine shopping in the supermarket, just pick up an extra bag of rice, can of tuna or chili, or package of pasta and drop it off at a local food bank.

In 2010, 1 in 6 Americans (nearly 49 million adults and children) did not have access to enough food.

5. Pay it Forward

Pay it forwardCatherine Ryan Hyde's book Pay it Forward and the movie of the same name promoted the idea of doing good deeds to help make the world a better place. You never know how much a small act of kindness will mean to someone. It could change their life!

Visit the Pay it Forward Foundation Experience to read about how people are changing the world, one small act at a time.

Like you, I always enjoyed Valentine's Day most when I was a child. Exchanging cards with all my classmates was great fun. I have a family member who scheduled a colonoscopy for her husband on Valentine's Day.
