5 Ways to Stop Dog Aggression

Ranked #29,805 in Pets & Animals, #1,114,944 overall

While dogs can definitely be your very best friend, all dogs are a big different. Even the most laid back dogs may display some aggression from time to time to people or to other dogs. If this occurs, it is important that you take care of the problem as soon as possible. Although aggressive tendencies may not seem to bad at first, if you allow them to continue to develop, they can become even worse, turning into a really big problem for you in the future. If you want to make sure that you stop dog aggression in your dog, here are some of the top ways that you can address and stop this problem in its tracks.

Way #1 - Take Your Dog to the Vet

If it is the very first time that your dog has shown aggression, whether he is an older dog or a new puppy, it is a good idea to take your dog to the veterinarian to have him checked out. In some cases, new aggression from an otherwise nonaggressive dog can be a sign that your dog is having a medical problem. Since your dog can't tell you if he is sick or in pain, often dogs will act aggressive, snapping, baring their teeth, growling, hiding, trying to bite, or barking. This may be the sign of an illness or an injury. If your dog is in pain, you don't want to try some of the other methods of stopping dog aggression. So it is best to have a dog checked out if this is the first time anything like this has happened.

Way #2 - Socialize Puppies

One of the best things you can do to stop dog aggression, particularly towards other dogs, is to socialize puppies. When your dog is just a puppy, you need to socialize him with other dogs, as well as other animals. Allow the puppy to play with dogs that behave very well and with other puppies. When puppies play with other puppies, they play and have fun, while learning some important social lessons. Playing with older dogs can also teach them the proper way that they should behave and will also let them know that other animals are friends.

Way #3 - Address Aggressive Problems Immediately

Whenever a problem with aggression pops up, it is important that you immediately address this problem. Every time that it happens, address the problem - don't let your dog just get away with being aggressive, since this behavior can actually be quite dangerous. Let your dog know that this behavior is not okay. Non physical methods of punishment can be used effectively for aggression, as long as you use them right away so your dog knows why he is in trouble. Way #4 - Provide Adequate Training

Providing adequate training to your pooch is another way that you can work on stopping dog aggression. It is important that your dog learns that you are the boss and in charge. This way, when you give a command to your dog, he listens to you and does not continue the aggressive behavior that he is displaying. You may even want to have the help of a good trainer if your dog is displaying aggressive traits. Good trainers are often able to identify the things causing the aggressive behavior and can teach you how to handle this behavior in a proper way.

Way #5 - Give Your Dog a Good Environment

In order to stop dog aggression and avoid it in the future, you need to give your dog a good environment that is supportive for him. Dogs do well when they are in great environments. You want to ensure that you are providing an environment that doesn't cause your dog anxiety. Make sure your dog has an area that will make him feel safe. He should have a good bed to sleep on as well as some dog toys for chewing, which will help to cut down on the anxiety that your dog deals with. Giving your dog enough exercise is important. This way your dog doesn't get too excited or aggressive when he gets out to play. Your dog should also be able to easily get to food and water. Dogs who are hungry can be come defensive and aggressive. If you allow your dog easy access to his food and water, it can get rid of anxiety and prevent or stop aggressive behavior.
