The quarters of the 50 states are another way that children can get interested in learning the names and capitals. Whenever I get change back I allow my children to look through it for quarters that we are still missing. From Alabama Chocolate Pecan Pie to Wyoming Sheepherder Chili, Marlen has found a recipe to connect to each of the 50 States.
- State Recipes
- Compiled by Marlen
A poster looking to improve her child's geography grade asked for a recipe from each of the 50 States. Marlen decided to take on the project, with the self-appointed criteria that each recipe had to have the name of the State in the title and that, whenever possible, the recipe reflect a typical ingredient or dish from the State (i.e., Wisconsin Cheese Soup).
Many teachers are using it in their classrooms to teach Home Economics as well as Geography. Others are printing the recipes and giving them out as gifts.

Hands-on State Symbol Activities
Dig for your State's Information
Research the main commodities of your state. For many states, corn is the major agricultural product. Fill a bucket with dried corn, popcorn or cracked corn. Bury state symbols, agricultural products and items that represent important facts about your state in the corn.

Quarter................ Bucket ...............
Cow
Consider adding a word scramble of your state's motto, a map with the state capital clearly marked, plastic animals representing the state animal and bird as well as a leaf from the state tree.
Children can dig for a new clue each day and write a paragraph about it in their journals.
The hands-on, tactile activities will help children remember facts about their home state.
