How did you learn the 50 States and their Capitals?

From the lens 50 States and Capitals.

If you were to do it over again or if you are teaching a child, what method would you use?

I am going to visit all the states and have been to 36. This is a great lens and I have repinned it so it will be easy for me to find. Thanks for all the great info.

    Straight memorization
  • Upon-Request Apr 9, 2012 @ 8:00 pm | delete
I learned them the old-fashioned way by memorizing, without music. But once we started traveling as a kid it was much easier to keep them straight.
  • sandyswriter-review Apr 9, 2012 @ 5:01 pm | delete
Last time I was here, it was sandyspider. This seems even larger yet. Nice resource.
  • agoofyidea Mar 15, 2012 @ 9:47 am | delete
I can name all 50 states and most 47? of the capitols. My family traveled all over the US when I was young and it is easy to remember the states when you have visited them.
  • iijuan12 Feb 24, 2012 @ 12:43 am | delete
I love using songs! Thank you for the great resources!
  • jimmyworldstar Feb 5, 2012 @ 3:43 pm | delete
I watched that Animaniacs show with my kids and surprisingly I learned all 50 capitals from that. Of course, I didn't retain the information though but it was a clever way of doing so.
  • nsixx99 Feb 4, 2012 @ 9:18 pm | delete
We learned the states and capitals through a song in 3rd grade I believe. I do not remember the whole song but it was an easy way to learn them.
  • skiesgreen Feb 2, 2012 @ 11:22 pm | delete
Well as I don't live in America it was just by observation and news broadcasts but I am still not familiar with them all. Great lens and wonderful study in your usual style. Blessed and featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen 2012. Hugs
  • KateConn Feb 2, 2012 @ 7:21 am | delete
I learned them in 3rd grade I believe, but now I'm lucky to get 30! Your lens is a great reference tool though, I'll be stopping by whenever I forget one, thanks!
  • Mastersipep Jan 5, 2012 @ 1:52 pm | delete
how i wish until now i can still completely recognize all the 50 states and their capitals... its quiet difficult but then using the puzzle it was then very helpful...
  • Seker22 Dec 6, 2011 @ 1:36 pm | delete
6th grade geography did wonders. Not even sure why.
  • YayasHome Nov 17, 2011 @ 9:35 am | delete
Because I've lived in almost alla' the 50 states, it was important to me that I be able to list 'em all. I've used many methods for learning, including flash cards an' song.
  • of_different_sorts Nov 5, 2011 @ 5:11 pm | delete
I remember that memorizing the 50 states and their capitals was an assignment when I was in 5th grade. The puzzle method is the one I would choose.
  • JoyfulReviewer Oct 1, 2011 @ 11:01 am | delete
Pure memorization. Today I'd definitely use visual and audio tools. Puzzles could make it fun.

Back when I learned, we didn't use songs, but songs are such a fun way to learn facts. Love this comprehensive lens! Thanks for featuring Hawaii and Loco Moco!

I used to play it too. Was that the one where you had little trucks and had to go to certain states to get what they produced? I learned a lot from that game.

Hi, and thanks for directing me here. I added my New England lens. The easiest way to teach my son about the 50 states would be in an on-line game. I really like your links and info.

  • sandyspider May 11, 2009 @ 9:35 am | delete
Thanks for the invite. I just added my Hawaiian lens. This is a very informative and educational lens of the 50 states. It is a shame that too many of today's young people would not be able to tell you all 50 states or capitals. This is a great lens to learn the states.

I was never much of a history buff in school, but I once won 2nd place in the state science fair. Science and animals have always been more my thing! You have some great tutorials, these must be very helpful to teachers. I'll be sure to pass them along to any science teachers (I do know a couple)!

I remember using a puzzle in elementary school to learn the 50 states. Then, in either middle school or maybe even early high school, I think we used flashcards for learning and practicing the states and their capitols, as well as a game kinda like ... what's that card game where you keep turning two cards over till you get a match? Concentration? Anyway, we had to turn over the state and it's capitol to get a match.
  • kiwisoutback Feb 12, 2009 @ 3:14 pm | delete
I was always interested in learning geography and about the states when I was kid. If you can name all of the states just based on the shape of them, you've done well.

Superb educational lens! Going to my Grandchildren and my brother who used to be able to rattle them all off flawlessly. 5 bright stars and a favored spot!

Great lens. I didn't need to learn the states (as and Englishman) but I'm gradually visiting them all. I don't remember needing to learn the counties and county towns of England either though.
  • Joan4 Dec 10, 2008 @ 2:55 pm | delete
This is a great site! Will be watching as lenses are added per area too! What a great geography lesson!
  • OhMe Dec 10, 2008 @ 2:44 pm | delete
I really can't remember how I learned them but am getting some good review studying them again with my grandson. He can name them all and their capitals and place them correctly on the map. He could do that last year but keeps practicing to be quicker. Great lens with some wonderful links. The Melissa and Doug Wooden Puzzle is a great learning tool.
