I started out researching Earth Day and ended up compiling a list of ways to go green from various sources which include the internet, television, and things that my grandmother taught me as I was growing up. I've included links at the bottom of lense from my sources so that you can read the full article and maybe gain even more insight and tips!
There are more than 50 ways, so hopefully you can incorporate at least 10 into your own lifestyle! We only get one chance while we are here to make the earth more viable for future generations. Our kids shouldn't have to "clean up" after us and suffer the consequences of actions we are taking today. Clean up the earth and take care of it!
Make sure to leave your own Go Green tips and thanks for checking out my lense! Please rate it!
Ron Cobb created an ecology symbol,(in photo) which was later adopted as the Earth Day symbol, and was published on November 7th, 1969, in the Los Angeles Free Press and then placed it in the public domain. The symbol was a combination of the letters "E" and "O" taken from the words "Environment" and "Organism", respectively. [resourced from Wikipedia] read more...

  • Your fridge temp should be between 37 and 40 degrees F (no more, to keep bacteria at bay); your freezer between zero and 5 degrees.Make sure the doors are properly sealed by slipping a dollar bill between the rubber gasket and the door frame.if you don't feel resistance when you tug on it then replace gasket. (do this on all four sides of door!)

  • Keep fridge or freezer out of sunlight

  • Do a full load in dishwasher (if it's energy efficient) and it costs less than doing them by hand, water wise.

EARTH DAY FOUNDER

In The Beginning...

John McConnell.
He was a peace activist who, in 1969, at the National UNESCO Conference, proposed that all people needed to preserve and renew the threatened ecological balances of which we all depend on.

Now here we are 40 years later feeling the effects of what he brought up at that conference with global warming, and I wonder if more could have been done in earlier years.

One can only hope that we now can do enough preservation and recycling to make the Earth environmentally sound for our future generations.

THE FIRST EARTH DAY

TRIVIA
The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 and over 20 million people participated that year.

Earth Day is celebrated now by over 500 million people in 175 countries.

Earth Day falls on or around the birthdays of several environmental spokespersons

Originally celebrations coincided with the vernal equinox

First celebrated in San Francisco, California

First suggested by peace activist John McConnell to be held on March 21, the day of the March equinox

Later suggested by Senator Gaylord Nelson, to be celebrated on April 22

Saint Francis is the patron saint of ecologists

World Environment Day also held on June 6

A 16-year-old high school student, Betsy Vogel, an environmental advocate and social activist that enjoyed sewing costumes and unique gifts, made a 4 x 6-foot (1.8 m) green and white "theta" ecology flag to commemorate the first Earth Day, while she was still in high school. (shown in photo)

Americans use five times the amount of water that Europeans use.

To flush a toilet we use 7.5 to 26.5 litres (2 to 7 gallons) of water.

It takes one million years for glass to decompose in a landfill.

In a five-minute shower we use 95 to 190 litres (25 to 50 gallons) of water.

To brush your teeth you use 7.5 litres (2 gallons) of water.

For an automatic dishwasher 35 to 45 litres (9 to 12 gallons) of water is used.

Every hour, Americans discard 2.5 million plastic bottles.

If all the world's water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for us to use would equal only about one tablespoon.

If every American household switched to compact florescent light bulbs, the energy saved could power an entire city.

Each day the sun evaporates a trillion tons of water.

A person can live about a month without food, but only about a week without water. If a human does not absorb enough water dehydration is the result.

More than 2 billion people on earth do not have a safe supply of water.

A quarter of the world's population is without safe drinking water.

Air quality has improved since 1970, with the main pollutant levels, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, lead and particulates like soot and smoke, falling by 64 percent.

Water is the only substance that is found naturally on earth in three forms: liquid, gas, solid.

Place 4 cups of water into 2 quart sauce pan set on medium/high heat (be careful not to let water boil over)

Once the bella bar mixture is ready add it to the 5 gallon bucket and stir

Going Green, Saving Green
In Southwest Riverside County, conservation programs teach students the value of sustainable living. Saving energy can mean saving money. That is what Southwest Riverside County students have been learning through various green programs at their schools. Michelle L. Klampe of The Press-Enterprise reports on how these programs that focus on reducing waste and conserving energy and water also show schools how to save a few bucks.
