(500) Days of Summer

When I first heard about (500) Days of Summer, I was intrigued - a nice, creative indie low-key romantic comedy. I'd had little experience with Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Zooey Deschanel at that point, so I really wasn't sure what I was getting myself into.

While I realize that this review is a couple of years late, as it came out in 2009, I feel that the movie did fly under a lot of people's radars, so I figured I'd bring some attention to it. So what did I think of director Marc Webb's big screen debut? Well, you'll just have to scroll down to the review to find out!

My Review

(500) Days of Summer is a very interesting study - at a casual glance, you might suspect just another romantic comedy, but that's really not the case. Once you start watching, you're confronted with something very different and special. The first thing you'll likely realize is that the story is told entirely out of sequence, with colorful animated bits showing which out of the 500 days you're currently watching. The second thing you'll notice is that, as the narrator (Richard McGonagle [JAG]) points out very early on is that this is a story of boy meets girl... however, it's not a love story.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) plays Tom, a man who works at a greeting card company who falls for a recent hire: Summer (Zooey Deschanel [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy]). The story is of his pursuit of her, and their quirky and tumultuous relationship that follows. The acting is quite excellent throughout - Tom is an extremely likeable character and very, very easy to relate to for the undying romantics out there, and is played wonderfully by Gordon-Levitt. Summer, on the other hand, is the epitome of what is called the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" on TV Tropes. She's cute, fun, and extremely interesting - but prone to being very moody and detached, the perfect girl, but entirely impossible to catch and tie down to anything. Deschanel is positively charming in the role, as she often is, and even gets a chance or two to show off her lovely singing talents.

Marc Webb also shines in the way he shoots the wonderfully penned script, jumping between different film styles, seemingly as the mood suits such. I won't say much here, as these jumps are rather unpredictable and fun when they occur. Don't go into this movie expecting your standard romantic comedy, though - expect something more along the lines of High Fidelity, more of a funny analysis of romantic relationships and how amusing elements of what's expected in relationships can be at times.

Final Score

A perfect five stars for this film, hands down. This is one of my top 10 films, especially as I somewhat relate to the frustrated hopeless romantic that is Tom. The acting and directing are superb, and as of writing this, it gives me quite a bit of hope for the upcoming Amazing Spider-man reboot, also helmed by Marc Webb.

Every scene brings something special - and, without spoiling anything, the Expectation/Reality scene is one of my favorite pieces of cinema of all time - if you have seen the movie, you likely understand, and if you haven't, once you see it, you'll completely understand.

I often say that anyone who is in the dating scene should watch this and High Fidelity to get a little bit of perspective. I very, very much recommend this movie to anyone, though - a wonderful, quirky little independent film!

(500) Days of Summer Soundtrack

(500) Days of Summer has an absolutely wonderful collection of music on its soundtrack, as well. Regina Spektor's "Hero," which plays over the Expectation/Reality scene is my particular favorite, and adds so much to the way the scene plays out. Another favorite of mine is "She's Got You High," a cute, romantic tune by Mumm-Ra that plays over the closing credits.

Even if you haven't seen the movie, give a few tracks (particularly "Hero") a quick listen, you won't be sorry!
