Analysis of communication Fiat 500 & Interactions with the launch of Alfa Romeo MiTo

In this case study we analyse the digital marketing strategies of FIAT 500 and Alfa Romeo MiTo. We start doing a briefly introduction of Fiat Group and after analyzing digital marketing principles with the help of a presentation and videos.

FIAT group 

Fiat S.p.A., an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin), is an Italian automobile manufacturer, engine manufacturer, financial and industrial group based in Turin in the Piedmont region. Founded in 1899 by a group of investors including Giovanni Agnelli.
Fiat Group is the largest vehicle manufacturer in Italy, with a range of cars starting from small microcars to sports cars made by Ferrari, and vans and trucks ranging from the Ducato to Iveco commercial trucks. Besides Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A, the Fiat Group automotive companies include Ferrari S.p.A., Iveco S.p.A. and Maserati S.p.A. The Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. companies include: Abarth & C. S.p.A., Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A., Fiat Automobiles S.p.A., Fiat Professional and Lancia Automobiles S.p.A.. Ferrari S.p.A. is 85% owned by the Fiat Group. The European Car of the Year award, Europe's premier automotive trophy for the past 40 years, has been awarded twelve times to the Fiat Group, more than any other manufacturer. Most recently the New Fiat 500 has won the award for European Car (2008).

The 4P's: Product 

The new Fiat 500 was announced by Italian automaker Fiat on May 5, 2006. Images of the new Fiat 500 were presented on March 20, 2007, and the car was launched officially on July 4, 2007, with 250,000 in attendance.
The 500 is available with four different trim levels: Naked, Pop, Lounge, and Sport. Customers can choose also between 15 interior trims, 9 wheel options, 19 decals, and 12 body colours. (click on video below). There are over 500,000 different personalized combinations of the 500 that can be made by adding all kinds of accessories, decals, interior and exterior colours, and trims. The car is also available with Blue&Me Navigation system.
The Alfa Romeo MiTo is a three door sporty supermini, officially introduced on 19 June 2008. Designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the design is believed to be inspired by the 8C Competizione. The car has new "Alfa DNA" system which allows driver to choose between three different driving settings; Dynamic, Normal and All-Weather, this setting controls the behaviour of engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox. The MiTo has also LED tail lights and 250-litre (8.8 cu ft) boot space. The MiTo also features a Q2 electronic differential on the front wheels, which allows for faster and tighter cornering without loss of traction. The aggressiveness of the differential is linked to the DNA switch. Sportiest version the GTAof MiTo has 1.75 litre turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing both inlet and exhaust.
The MiTo GTA has top speed of 250 kilometres per hour (155 mph) and acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) in 5 seconds (enjoy the speed of Alfa MiTo GTA by clicking on the image below).

The 4P's: Promotion 

The new Fiat 500 was launched officially on July 4, 2007. It was the largest launch party held in the last ten years, a testament to the 500's huge popularity (we can watch this show by clicking on image below). The car was displayed in the squares of 30 cities in Italy for the launch.
Fiat planned an International operation called "500 wants you": it is a project that exploited the web to make the people involved in planning and design (click on image below).
The new Alfa MiTo introduced on June 19, 2008, in Castello Sforzesco in Milan; the international introduction was at British Motor Show in 2008. Alfa Romeo organized a lot of events to launch MiTo; the most important was in Turin, a suggestive context where it was possible to see the new Alfa MiTo as a absolute leading actor.
Alfa Romeo used internet and television to present its new car.

This was the slogan of Alfa Romeo advertising, a sort of YouTube for the digital generation which use the language Alfabet with thousands of icons and an editor to create own stories, vote the more beautiful and originals, create a clip network with the own community. The 4P's: Price 

For Fiat 500 there are three on road prices: euro 10.500, euro 12.500 and euro 14.500. The Fiat 500 is an utility car and for this reason should be cheap. We asked to a sample of customers to fill in a questionnaire about the price of this car. The most of them think that Fiat 500 is too expensive (the result is shown in the presentation).
Anyway the costumer can choose between two price solutions: "500 cents" paying only 5 Euros a day and "50to500" (a new financial formula) paying the car in two installments: 50% immediately and 50% after two years.
The target of Alfa MiTo is different. It is a car for young, dynamic and fashion people. The price of MiTo is from euro 15.000 to euro 25.000; it wants to compete with Audi1, Mini Cooper and VW New Bettle.

The 4P's: Place 

Fiat based cars are constructed all around the world-the largest concern outside Italy is in Brazil. It also has factories in Argentina and Poland. Fiat has a long history of licensing its products to other countries regardless of local political or cultural persuasion. Joint venture operations are found in France, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, India, and China.
It is Italy's largest industrial concern. It also has significant worldwide operations, operating in 61 countries with 1,063 companies that employ over 223,000 people, 111,000 of whom are outside Italy.
For these reasons, the Fiat Group target (including Fiat 500 and Alfa MiTo) is improving its modalities of distribution through internet; an use always more frequent of the websites (www.fiat500.com and www.alfaromeo.it) through a personalized supply that satisfy necessities of the single consumer and through the specialization of the car distributor.
