The Original Shrink-To-Fit® Button-Fly Jeans from Levi's®

Levi Strauss and his partner invented and patented the very first pair of blue jeans in 1873. Although they've changed some basically they're the same as they were then - Classic 501® Button-Fly Jeans.

About Levis 501® Button-Fly Jeans

Levis 501's are still the favorites of many people today (including myself), and even though they have lasting power and are very comfortable they are quite reasonably priced! (They can be purchased from a couple of places online for much less than retail.)

No matter if you're here to find a pair of 501's® or if you're just interested in finding out more about them, there is probably something on this page that will interest you.

Product Description: Levi 501® Jeans

501® Button-Fly Jeans are straight fitting through the seat, thigh and leg and have a 5-button fly instead of a zipper.

They have 5 pockets (small inner pocket tucked into the right front pocket) and have the traditional Arcuate ("V" shape) stitching on the 2 back pockets.

These can be worn cuffed, straight, a bit large (if you prefer to wear them that way) or to a just-right fit.

Rivets are on the front pockets (an original design, one of the trademarks of the jeans) that were also included with the originals in the latter 1800's, which act to increase durability and strength.

What's special about them:

They're the originals! There are no other jeans made either then or now that match the quality of 501's® and perhaps there never will be.

One of the greatest features about Levi's Classic 501's® is that when they are purchased the fabric has never been washed, so the wearer can wash to match how they want the jeans to look. For example, if washed often the jeans will fade more and are also more likely to fade according to the person's shape. If washed in cold and not washed too often, the jeans will retain their dark color.

A wearer of Levi 's 501® Button-Fly Jeans is wearing a piece of history, not just a pair of jeans!

*Note: When you wash these jeans make sure to wash them alone or with other jeans - they do fade and if washed with light colors or whites the dye will affect the appearance of the garments. This is true especially of the first few washings.

How to Find the Right Size for 501's®

Most people are used to buying their jeans in a specific size and length such as "8 petite" or "Men's Large". These are not like that - you need to have your actual waist and inseam measurements in inches to know which size to select.

Since 501® Button-Flys are "shrink-to-fit" they need to be purchased at a larger size than actual inches for the waist and inseam. They will shrink approximately 10%, but instead of having to pull out a calculator and figure it out there is a post on the Fashion Fiend blog that gives the specifics:

Levi's 501's® General History

1873: Levi Strauss and a gentleman named Jacob Davis (the inventor of the famous rivets for jeans) patented the first pair of jeans. In the day they were called "waist overalls" and had a cinch, one back pocket (with the classic Arcuate stitching), a watch pocket and suspender buttons in the front.

1886: The famous "two horse" leather patch is added to them. This was done to send out the message of originality and strength of the jeans.

Approximately 1890: The number "501" was assigned, due to the fact that lot numbers were being assigned to manufactured products.

1936: The first trademark red tab is added to the pants in order to differentiate them from other jeans using Arcuate stitching at the time. (The stitching was not yet patented.)

1937: The suspender buttons are removed from the "overalls", but they come with snap buttons so that wearers are still able to fasten suspenders to them.

World War II: The War Production Board has set rules for conservation of raw materials, and Levi Strauss modifies their products to meet the rules. As a result, the crotch rivet, watch pocket rivets and back cinch are taken off to conserve fabric and metal. Since the Arcuate stitching is decorative only, it is removed also but is painted on the pockets by sewing machine operators to maintain the design.

Approx 1947: Post-WWII version of Levi's 501'sˊ is created, bringing it closer to today's design.

1960: The word "overalls" is replaced by the word "jeans" with advertising and packaging. This is due to the use of the word "jeans" by teens in association with these type of pants.

1964: Levi's 501® Button-Fly Jeans become part of the Smithsonian Institution's permanent collection in Washington, D.C.

1966: The first commercial for Levi's 501's® Button-Fly Jeans is aired.

1993: A contest is conducted to find the oldest existing pair of Levi's 501ˊ Jeans. The oldest pair found dates back to the 1920's.

1997: LS&CO purchases a pair of circa 1890 501's for $25,000.00. (!)

2003: The company celebrates the 130th year of the invention of the blue jean.

Back in the late 70's, this Levi's Jeans commercial was quite famous. (I remember this commercial - I hate to admit that.)

It's actually rather amazing how advanced it was for the time!
