Thoughts on art? Share them here.

I was having fun taking a bunch of polls on Squidoo and was inspired to create my own on the subject of art. I figured Squidoo members in search of polltaking trophies could use some more variety. :)

You don't need any special art background to answer these questions, so have fun!

UPDATE: When I made this lens, I had no idea how much discussion it would encourage. Thank you so much for all the thought provoking comments to my query, "What is art?" as well as to the questions themselves! Keep 'em coming! If this is your first time here, be sure to read through some of the comments, lots of fascinating and varied takes on the subject of art.

What is art?

I'm fascinated by what people do and don't consider art. How about you?

A beautiful introduction to art. We all need to foster and support arts and culture in our communities.

    Agreed!

Art is to change the function of something. The urinoir of Marcel Duchamp shows accactly that. To place something in a different context makes you think about the true nature of things. Art needs to work on many different levels. On a social level, a visual level, a philosophical level. It has to work and change every time you look at it.
  • RocklawnArts May 13, 2012 @ 2:27 pm | delete
I'm not sure all art has to live up to all of those levels, but I think the best art usually does.

A Great Lens ... I enjoyed it really. Art is a medium between reality and dreams ... the medium where reality explains itself to dreams and vise versa.

Thank you! I like your definition a lot. Also (since it won't let me comment on the poll above), I just didn't think of surrealism when I made it. That is an unintentional omission on my part, but at least I have "other" and comments enabled so people can tell me what I've missed! :)
  • JoyfulReviewer Nov 8, 2011 @ 6:11 pm | delete
Who's right and who's wrong? We each have our own opinion about what is art and what isn't.
  • RocklawnArts Nov 8, 2011 @ 6:55 pm | delete
No right or wrong, that's what makes the discussion so interesting.
