It was during the 1950s that products such as movies, books, music, and fashions were marketed specifically toward teens for the first time. This included the poodle skirt for teenage girls (adult women did NOT wear poodle skirts!).

The poodle skirt is a type of circle skirt that was popular during the 50s. Poodle skirts during this time were often made out of a large circle of wool felt, often in bright "girly" colors, and decorated with appliques along with embroidery, beading, and sequins.

Even though the poodle appliques were the most common decorations, other favorite symbols could be used instead, such as 45 rpm records, flamingos, or an artist's palette.

The full, swinging shape of the poodle skirt was perfect for dancing to the new Rock 'n Roll music of that time, doing dances such as the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug.

The rest of the outfit to go along with the poodle skirt often included a crinoline petticoat for extra shape and swish, along with a blouse and maybe a cardigan, saddle shoes and bobby sox, and topped off with a ponytail or other 50s hairstyle.
