The 50's Sci-Fi Deserve Respect

The 1950's sci-fi movies were known as the begining of all great science fiction movies that are out today. Now, some 50 years later one can look back on this decade as an influence to one of the most popular genres.

Influence and Quality

Movies like War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Forbidden Planet all have influence on modern day science fiction (not to mention countless other 50's sci sci). But are they still good today? I would say that many of them are, yes.

Let's start with Forbidden Planet, since that is the best one. Yes, the colors are a little odd and the acting is not the greatest - but what about the story. It is very unique and interesting. Other than Star Trek, this hasn't been done. It's characters are fairly complex at times, and the science fiction behind it all is also very interesting to watch. If you can get past a few dated objects, you can appreciate it's true beauty. It is best to view it as an art form.

Another movie that has a more modern feel to it is "The Day The Earth Stood Still." The acting is superb, visuals are pretty amazing, and the story elements good still be applied today. To me it is less interesting than "Forbidden" but that is only because it lacks the future technology ideas.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers - this movie has been remade at least 2 other times not too mention countless ripoffs. The story is great, eerie, frightening and suspenseful. The acting is a little off, but the end result is a good crowd pleaser. While it is slow, it should keep your attention.

The final great 50's sci-fi that I am going to talk about is "The Incredible Shrinking Man." Not only is this still a pretty decent movie, it had some amazing special affects. A man who shrinks because of a mysterious gas who must go through the rest of his life being small is a pretty scary picture. The ending is particularly eerie when the pin sized man must step out into the grass to continue to shrink - all with out the ones he loves.

Science Fiction is often times more art. The 50's represented fears, predictions and actions that dealt with the Cold War. If you have not seen these movies I suggest you check them out or at the very least read the recent movie reviews.
