Alexandria, MN - The Birthplace of America
30,000 years ago a glacier stopped in the west central area of Minnesota and deposited a massive amount of ice that was thousands of feet thick and embedded with tons of rock material.
When it melted the water that was buried in the debris formed thousands of lakes in the land that is known as Minnesota. Hence, Minnesota is famous as the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The city of Alexandria is located in this wide, low ridge with it's hills and lakes. Alexandria is in Douglas County and there are more than 300 lakes in Douglas County alone.
Alexandria is affectionately know as "Alex" by the residents and, if you were to mention Alex to anyone in the state they would know exactly what you were talking about.
I live in Alexandria. Our town's motto is "Easy to get to, hard to leave!" It's true.

Big Ole
The Centerpiece of Town

If you're visiting Alexandria for the first time, you'll want to be sure to have your picture taken with "Big Ole". He's a 28 foot, 4 ton Viking statue that was built for the New York World's Fair in 1965.
The Runestone Museum sponsors an event every year in late May called "Breakfast with Big Ole". More information is available at the Runestone Museum website.
A Map of Alexandria, MN
If you zoom out on this map you can see all of the lakes that are in and around our town. Most of the lakes are actually connected one to another by narrow channels. There are several lakes that are closely connected and they're known as "The Chain of Lakes."
Also, if you zoom out, you will see Lake Mary in the lower left corner. My home is on Lake Mary. To give some perspective to the map, I will tell you that Lake Mary is 4 miles in length with 24 miles of shoreline.

Carlos Creek Winery Annual Grape Stomp
A tradition
There is a winery located north of Alexandria that is really coming into its own. There is a stable there, as well. It's beautiful countryside. Each year in the fall they host a festival called 'The Grape Stomp". There are artists from all over the region who set up their wares in the stalls of the stable anpe d outside, as well.
There is wine tasting and music. The Grape Stomp also features an annual "I Love Lucy" contest where the contestants compete to see who can best replicate the famous scene where Lucy and Ethel are stomping grapes. It's hilarious.
