5 Told By Cuneo and Friends
Being named after my grandfather, Burlington, I have finally grown some antlers, that I proudly name my "crown". I know where ever my grandfather is today, he would be very proud of me, as I continue to grown stronger everyday!
It has taken almost all the warm part of the year, but now my "crown" is getting bigger and stronger.
Some of my brothers and many of my friends also have grown these "crowns".
Starting very small, but they keep growing thoughout the season.
Near the end of the warm months, they start to itch.
My best friend, Harper, also is qetting quite a "crown". We have started to westle with them. Pushing and sometimes ramming them together with a loud "Clack!"
Sometimes, we just put out "crowns" together and push. Seeing who can push the other one back the furthest.
Lately, I sometimes forget Harper is my best friend. We get so worked up, pushing so hard, "Clacking" so loud, it puts both of us in a different world.
Others look on, especially the young females. Which in turn, makes Harper and I really go at it, showing off.
I always wonder who will ever be the strongest?
At bedtime, my mother always tells the same story to us, boys. Someday, our playing will turn into a big factor of our life. Our new family, that someday we will have, will depend on our skills of using our "crowns". That is a very big park of growning up. She impress upon us to be strong and learn from our and our playmates mistakes.
Mom tells many stories of our Dad and Grand Dad burlington. So many different duels with their "crowns". She speaks of them very proudly, and gives us a lot to live up to.
It seems I have some very big hoofs to fill!
After it is safe, from Cuneo's grumbling belly, and he is far from sight and secent, myself, my family and my friends slowly venture to see what tasty treats are left behind.
My family and friends have just about eaten everything that is so tasty, within our reach.
I know there are more leaves, high in the trees, out of our reach. My favorite leaves are the ones from the fruit and nut trees. The Greener The Better!
We hide in the bushes and beside the trees, until Cuneo is done thrashing the fruit and nut trees. He does not seem to enjoy the tasty leaves, as we do, but goes for the big, round and somewhat hard things that fall from the limbs. That is sure alright with us. But we do like those fruits also!
So many of my family and friends, just wait in the covering of the thick forest. Waiting our turn.
We watch Cuneo leave this area and wait for it to be safe. We know Cuneo, his family and friends, will be back.
Down around the fruit and nut trees, the tall things that walk around on 2 feet are slow. I love to see how close they can get to me. Feeling their excitement! I don't even have to break into a run, just a few bouncing skips takes me far enough away. But still close enough to continue my feast. We have all learned that over the seasons. This is why, we venture into these aeas, where even 2 legged things are. These are our favorite trees and we can just skip away from them!
At times, when the 2 legged things are sound asleep, we use their road blocks and soft caves to rub against. They are the best thing, when we are itching! I could rub against them for hours.
Many of times, the 2 legged things come out, with big moon lights and screamed at us. I always stop, and stare at them, straight into their moon eyes. I try to understand them, but within a few seconds, they start running around, yelling and going crazy. Then I know it is time for me to fade back into the darkness, quickly!
I've tried many tiems, to communicate witht he big, growling thing, that has 4 huge rolling paws.
The 2 legged things sit inside the huge 4 paws belly. Then it awakes with a roar! The 4 paws things, has 2 or more moon, flooding every inch of me. I always stop, and stare right into it's moon eyes, trying my best to understand and communicate with it, just like I do with all the other friends of my forest!
Never being able to make any kind of contact, I always end up giving up and take my leave to the comfort of the forest.
We always go back to our favorite fruit and nut trees and watch these strange things from a distance.
Cuneo never gets enough of those mouth watering leaves down for all of us. So it is up to us to figure out how to get to those scrumptious leaves.
Sometimes, I have to try and be like the 2 legged things and stretch up, standing on my 2 back legs. I have to balance myself, on my back legs, while I hop! It is worth all the time and effort it takes.
We are really lucky, when the strange 2 legged things, breaks off the branches to get to Cuneo's fruit and nuts. Using the branches to hit the other branches. Those are what dreams are made of! They always leave us, all the branches and the best parts, the leaves!
I dream of those times. They do come back, many times durning the season. But I can't wait just for those times!
So my family, friends and myself, have many long days of just search, balancing and reaching for those leaves. We must get as much as possible, due to the next season, when the leaves dry up and fall off the trees. Leaving us with nothing to eat!
This is why we venture so close to those areas with the fruit and nut trees. To fill our stomachs so we may grow. Some of us have babies. My mother, she also still need them so she could nurse all my brothers and sisters that comes along every few seasons.

5 Camp Host Version
Up at the campground, people are amazed how close and how often, many of the black tail deer make themselves at home around the campground.Being around other deer, at other campgrounds, we had a heads up about them rubbing themselves at night, against the trailers and tents. But other people were not aware of this. We have been told many of times, that something was outside of their tents and/or trailers, trying to get in! They are always shocked with our explanation.
We have sat in and outside of our trailer, many times, and watched the deer come drown within 10 feet and sometimes closer to us, to eat the leaves and bushes. We thought it was so funny to watch them standing up on their back legs, reaching the tree branches. The Rangers had told us about this behavior, when we first arrived, but to see it was something else! As I have taken pictures of these strange behaviors.
They seem very comfortable with us, after being there a few weeks. We have sat outside in our lawn chairs and they walk right pass us within a few feet of us.
One came running across our view and suddenly notice us and made a long skid to a stop! Stood his ground a few seconds, looking us right in our eyes, then strolled off.
Driving our truck around on the roads, makes us very nervous, when we happened upon them. The deer stand right next to the road, looking at us. We don't know if they are going across the road or not! We hold our breath and slowly drive by.
So many times people come up to us and ask, "Where are the bears and deer?" Or "when do the bears and deer come out? I was told the bears hung from the trees here, like monkeys!" It is not like we snap our fingers and the show beings. But if you have the time, to sit back, the show does come to you! The deer will come down within feet to you.
The bears come when they want. Remember to keep a great distance from the, especially the mother and her cubs!
They look cuddly but they can be very deadly! I would never advise anyone to sneak up or walk up to them! Even for a picture!
Being in a place for months, most animals looked upon our trailer and us, as fixed figures. Still keeping a weary eye on us, they would continue to eat, play and chase others away from what they considered their area!
So not only are animals a joy to watch, but if you watch them carefully, you can learn! You will have a show and a lifetime of memories.. And Safety Should Always Be At The Fore Front!
