Sedan-style hatches, the mystery meat of the auto industry

We're seeing more and more strange vehicles on the market and I'm not talking about niche products like the Nissan Juke.

Take the Mercedes CLS, the likely progenitor of this phenomenon. Four doors, "coupe-like" styling and-what's that?-a hatch for a trunk. Seems the design doesn't leave much room for a "proper" trunk so the venerable hatchback is invoked. Score one for the home team... sort-of.

These models have proven so popular that other European manufacturers have rushed to imitate, including Audi and BMW. Even Mercedes is developing smaller, more accessible (i.e., lower-priced) versions based on this design.

Then we have BMW's "innovation", the GT model. They are so impressed with themselves for creating something between a sedan and a wagon that they are cloning their chopped sedan plus a mini-hatch to more accessible lines.

While I'm heartened that the hatch's utility has been recognized as a design solution, the compromise in headroom for 4-door coupes and the awkward lines of the GTs don't capture the simple elegance of the hatchback solution.

At least BMW gets it with its 1 Series hatchbacks and American manufacturers are bringing them back (e.g., Ford Focus). Now if Hyundai would just relent and ditch the outdated Elantra Touring wagonette for a true Elantra hatchback... I'd order that!
