Jason's Top Five Books

Jason is my 4 year old Grandson. He already is a connoisseur of good Childrens literature. Here are his top five choices for preschool reading materials, counting down to his favorite of all time.

#5 Good Night Gorilla

A Gorillas' Bedtime Adventure

#5 on Jasons book list, this book follows the Zoo Keeper as he closes the zoo for the night with a little assistance from a mischievious Gorilla. There are lots of pictures but not too many words. This was #1 on the Jason list for months when he was 2. I think he craves a little more action now that he's practically grown up. He liked my gorilla impressions. I'll be so sad when Good Night Gorilla finally goes off the bed-time story rotation.

#4 Ten Terrible Dinosaurs

Counting down Rowdy Dinosaurs

#4 on Jasons book list, this is a newcomer in his library. Ten dinosaurs rowdy play results in their departure one at a time. What a fun way to introduce preshoolers to subtraction. Guaranteed to make your little Dino ROAR!

#3 Go Away Big Green Monster!

Getting rid of the monsters!

#3 on Jasons' book list is monsterously good fun. First his eyes then his big nose then his sharp teeth; Big Green monster appears bit by bit. I was a little worried this book might be a little too scary. But Jason's not scared! He just tells the monster to go away. The monster vanishes a little at a time. In the end Jason has chased away the monster.

#2 Where the Wild Things Are

The perfect book for my little wild thing.

My Grandmother gave me a copy of this book for my 4th birthday in 1965! I read this book to my daughter (Jason's Mother) when she was little & it gives me huge pleasure to read it to my little grandson now. We have read it together so many times that Jason has memorized it & now, sometimes, he "reads" it to me.

#1 I love You Stinky Face

I love you even if you stink! Now that's love

#1on Jasons' list is a wonderful book about unconditional love. The little boy in the story questions what would happen if he were an unsavory creature. Each time his mother responds with a message of love & support. This has been Jasons' favorite since he was very little. I love this book because it gave us an opportunity to express our unwaivering love for Jason...even if he turns into a super stinky skunk!

Runner ups

Not top 5 but still good reading

These are books that on the bedtime reading rotation but are read less often.

Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)

It's not that Grandma's bad or lazy
it's just that Dr. Suess books make her CRAZY.
So, though I love you, tiny tot
read this book I will NOT
not in this house
not with a mouse
not on a boat
not with a goat....

Sunday with Seurat (Mini Masters)

This book is one in a series that presents masterpeices to youngsters. I like it a lot. But I'm afraid Jason doesn't find it as interesting as I do anymore. He likes something with a stronger story line.

Amazon Price: $6.95 (as of 12/10/2009) Buy Now

But Not the Hippopotamus

As with Sunday with Seurat, Jason seems to have lost interest in this book. It was a top 5 book for a loooong time. I think he just want a stronger story line.

Baby Beluga (Raffi Songs to Read)

Apparently babies enter the wold without much in the line of music appriciation & any old music will do. Even your tone deaf grandma's version of the Baby Beluga song. I quite singing the Baby Beluga song at Jasons request. Hands over the ears sends the message pretty loud & clear

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (Board Book)

This book was thrown away, partly for the same reason as Baby Beluga. The other problem was that my dog peed on it. (everyone's a critic) I don't think I'm going to replace it, but it was a good book.

I have to endorse "Over in the Ocean" and "Over in Jungle" illustrated by Jeanette Canyon, made of polymer clay. Beautiful to look at for the adults, and sing-song-y for the little ones. My 3 and 7 year olds LOVE them. Pick them up for Jason for the holidays you'll both be happy!

Green Eggs & Ham

OMG...this is even more annoying than the book!

I suppose I would be denying My poor little guy a proper cultural education if I didn't expose him to a little Dr Suess. So I found him this to watch & I have the video tapes that he can watch....but only if I'm not in the room!
