Melanoma is a far more serious skin cancer compared with squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers. Melanoma can almost always be cured in its early stages but it is likely to spread to other parts of the body if it is not caught early.

Melanoma can often be found early. There are 5 signs of skin cancer (key warning signs) that you can use as a guide to help you find this cancer early. The ABCDE rule can help you tell a normal mole from an abnormal mole. Moles that have any of these signs should be checked by your doctor.

It's important to know the difference between melanoma and a harmless mole. Almost all moles are harmless but it is important to notice changes in a mole-- such as its size, shape, or color-- that suggest a melanoma may be starting.

The First of 5 Signs of Skin Cancer To Watch Out For Is Asymmetry. It Is Represented By The Alphabet "A"

A stands for Asymmetry. When you observe the shape of the right mole in the diagram, you can see that the left half of the mole is not symmetrical to the right half. This may indicate Melanoma. Melanoma will generally have an irregular shape that is asymmetrical.

You should watch out for the sudden appearance of these types of mole growth. As you examine your skin on a regular basis you should be aware of any growth that either increases in size or suddenly appears.

The Second Sign To Watch Out For Is The Border Of The Mole. It is easily Reminded By "B"

For the letter B, we should think about the border of the growth. The border of a benign mole is round or oval and the mole feels smooth but the border of malignant melanoma is irregular like a blotted spot and feels rough and uneven.

As cancerous growths have borders that tend to be indistinguishable, such growths need to be examined by a doctor.

The Third Sign Of Skin Cancer Is Associated With Letter "C", The Color Of The Growth

The letter "C" represents color and informs you to watch out for the color of any new growth on your skin. Suspicious mole usually has two or more shades of colors. Multiple colors or uneven distribution of color may indicate cancer. The colors of malignant melanoma could be brown, black, translucent, tan, blue or red. If you come across a growth in these colors it might be one of the signs of melanoma skin cancer.

The Letter "D" Represents Diameter. Observe The Diameter Of The Mole

It is important to remember that the letter D is for the diameter of the growth. A skin growth's large size may be an indication of cancer. A rapid increase in size over weeks or months may indicate cancer. A growth with a diameter of more than a quarter of an inch should always be check out by a doctor. Growths that are of this size or larger have a greater chance of being or becoming cancerous.

The Fifth Signs Of Skin Cancer Melanoma To Watch Out For - Evolving and Elevated Growth

The letter E refers to the evolving nature and elevation of the growth.

A new mole may appear and evolve from a normal looking mole into a growth. Look for changes over time, such as a mole that grows in size or that changes color or shape. It can also be an old mole that recently shows signs of evolving. Moles may also evolve to develop new signs and symptoms, such as new itchiness or bleeding.

Skin cancer growths are usually elevated above the skin and will have a surface that is uneven. Watch for this and all of the other five signs of skin cancer to keep your skin monitored at all times.

    good information, we can't do enough to spread the word about the dangers of skin cancer. Incredibly there are still people who have never heard of melanoma!

    Very informative and alarming. As a cancer survivor, I tend to watch for any signs of recurrence all the time. Fortunately, I have been in remission from bone cancer for 21 years now. However, one of my best friends lost his grandmother to skin cancer a few years ago, and both of his parents have had cancerous moles removed as well. Cancer in general is so widespread that it is literally a fight for life.
