Tip #1 for a Successful Job Interview

Be Prepared

Be Prepared

And take a mental load off

This might sound obvious, but there are many aspects of preparing for a successful job interview that many candidates don't realize. One of the best tips for a successful job interview that I can give is to put together a checklist of all the things that you need for the interview.

Some things on the checklist might be:

1. Bring multiple copies of your resume

2. Print out driving directions to the office

3. Know how long it takes to get there

4. Remember to turn off cell phone before arriving at the office

5. Bring a bottle of water

There are many more things that could go on this list, and they will vary from one individual to another. But once you have a list together, it will take a mental burden off your shoulders and help prepare you for a successful job interview.

Tip #2 for a Successful Job Interview

Use Proper Body Language

Use The Right Body Language

The best form of nonverbal communication

There are subtle, nonverbal forms of communication that are scientifically proven to increase your likeability and help build instant rapport with your interviewer.

They are called your "natural attraction factors," and are small, simple changes to your body language that make you appear more confident and help you command respect. Everyone possesses these but just needs to understand how to "unleash them."

One of the ways to use proper body language is to make positive eye contact. Eye contact is so important because it is one of the strongest forms of nonverbal communication.

A person's qualities and personality can be detected simply based on eye contact. Making direct eye contact communicates confidence and high self-esteem, two key qualities employers look for in candidates.

But be careful how you use eye contact. There is a correct way to use eye contact. If you're not careful, you could send the wrong message.

Wouldn't you like to know how to use the power of body language, including eye contact, to increase your likeability and build instant rapport with the interviewer? Imagine how much more receptive the interviewer will be to everything you have to say.

That is the power of body language, and Killer Interview Secrets has an entire section devoted to teaching you how to use it in your next interview.

Body Language

Nonverbal communication is so powerful, yet so subtle. Making small changes in your body language can make the interviewer more receptive to what you have to say.

Tip #3 for a Successful Job Interview

Dress Appropriately

Dress Appropriately

A suit isn't always the best option

Knowing what to wear on a job interview is half the battle of the interview itself. The old adage could never be so true, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

When you're going on a job interview, your appearance is extremely important. Whether or not you look professional or sloppy could play a huge role on if you get hired.

When first deciding what to wear on a job interview, you should first take into consideration the culture of the company you are interviewing with, and dress accordingly.

If you want to get the job, your choice of what to wear on a job interview should match or be slightly dressier than the normal work attire of the company. Appropriateness is the most important factor on what to wear on a job interview.

But figuring out what to wear is only half the battle. You need to have winning job interview answers prepared for the interview.

Tip #4 for a Successful Job Interview

Know the Company

Know the Company

Study the current events of the company

Walking into an interview with proper knowledge of the company will score points with the interviewer. Other candidates may have the same job experience as you, but you can set yourself apart by demonstrating your knowledge of current events of the company and its industry.

Understanding the current events of the company will give you opportunities to ask questions during the interview, which is definitely a key to a successful job interview.

You will also want to ask appropriate questions on things you find out. Asking the right questions will give you an edge over your competition, and is critical to having a successful job interview.

You should always write down a list of the best job interview questions to ask beforehand. That's because the type of questions you ask is a true reflection of how knowledgeable and professional you are.

Ask Good Questions

There are "good" and "bad" questions to ask in an interview. Good questions show your intelligence. Bad questions show your unprofessionalism. Know the difference.

Tip #5 for a Successful Job Interview

Know Your Skills

Know Your Skills

Use examples to illustrate your skills

You need to be very familiar with your resume and skill set before going on any interview. Remember, the interviewer is most likely meeting you for the first time, and may not know much about you. Plus, the interviewer is probably meeting with several candidates for the same position, and you need to separate yourself from the crowd.

You must effectively communicate your skills and qualifications to the interviewer, and you can only do so if you are totally familiar with your resume and skills.

The best way to showcase your skills to the interviewer is to tell a "story." This will give the interviewer specific evidence to support any characteristic you may possess.

Let's say that you have great leadership skills. If you simply say that you are a "leader," you will not give the interviewer any reason to believe you. But if you told them about a time you exhibited leadership, then it will give concrete evidence when you demonstrated that characteristic.

Tell A Story

Telling stories is the best interview strategy, hands-down. But you have to do it in the right way or you will hurt your chances of getting hired.
