The 60 Day Squidoo Challenge: Make a Supplemental Income On Squidoo In 60 Days Or Less!
-
Hello friends, Many of you who are considering taking The 60 Day Squidoo Challenge are already on Squidoo, but you came here to create a web presence and not to make a supplemental income. Before I took the challenge, that was me, too. I got a littl...
Week One: Getting Started
- It's August 6, 2008, and I have created The 60 Day Squidoo Challenge lens and How To Find Enough Content To Write AT LEAST One Squidoo Lens a Day, Every Day! so that makes two lenses for the day. Bookmarking the 60 Day Challenge lens in StumbleUpon and Digg.
Coming back later to add pictures - this was a major lens and effort, so I'm tired. - August 7, 2008 and I have completed How To Study the Holy Bible More Effectively and With Confidence, finally. It needs some serious spice, but I will have to do it later. The content is there, so I can come back later with fresh eyes to figure out how to make it "pop".
On a brighter note, The 60 Day Challenge was blessed by a Squid Angel! Just look at the rank! I worked hard bringing this lens and 10 Things Moms Can Do To Reduce Environmental Impact AND Have Healthier Kids up to snuff. I don't think that one got blessed, but it is about to break Tier 1 if it continues getting traffic and ratings, so I would LOVE some attention on that lens, wink wink ;-) - It's August 8, and a LOT is going on. I can't get into the Olympics because I am focused on making this work. Stumbled upon The Ever Project, an offshoot of Squidoo, and found out through a hands-on experience that Ever lenses count as Squidoo lenses! On an emotional tyraid, I created http://worst.pizza.ever.com about my bad experience with some new junk from Pizza Hut. I am not counting this lens toward my goal of one a day. However, I began to see the HUGE monetary potential of The Ever Project, so I created http://worst.jobs.ever.com as a serious lens, but it will take a while for me to develop.
So, I'm still liable for one lens today, but I already know what it will be about, and it won't take long to build.
**NOTE** I'm pretty sure that 10 Things Moms Can Do To Reduce Environmental Impact AND Have Healthier Kids got blessed by a Squid Angel, too! It was in the 2100s last night for overall rank, and is now #873! Whoo hoo! That's two Tier 1 lenses already! So, I have to work on bringing my other older ones up to snuff. I can see that this is a real balancing act...
Will post today's lens in a few. - It's early in the morning on August 9, and I took a while finishing http://worst.jobs.ever.com. I probably should have followed my first mind and created another Facebook lens, but this one presented a challenge that I couldn't pass up - the design of Ever lenses. It's very drab, so I did all that I could to spice it up. I don't know...but I think that will be my last one until I learn more about how to leverage those kinds of lenses.
In the meantime, I have another one to do today (The worst jobs lens was technically for yesterday), and it's going to have to be an easy one because I have been spending too much time on Squidoo. It has paid off with two Tier 1 lenses in 3 days (Woot!), but I have to create a balance.
Will be visiting challenge members' lenses and profiles today to make for good networking :-)
***
Had such a long day that I had to make today's lens a quickie. So, it's a SquidLit lens, a Squidoo site just for book reviews. It's the review of the best success book I have ever read in my life! http://www.squidoo.com/polishing_the_diamond_in_the_rough - Day Five August 10, and things are going well. Although my life is really busy, I still managed to create a SquidLit lens for The Color Purple. Since I have a Facebook group devoted to the movie, tonight I plan on fully developing this lens plus a lens for the movie, which should drive some non-Squidoo user traffic to the lenses. Hopefully some social bookmarking and new squids will come out of it :-)
- Today has been HECTIC, but I have been chipping away at some Squidoo duties. Besides SERIOUSLY updating an older lens (The Secret to Becoming a Stay-At-Home Mom Without Going Broke), I created the 60 Day Challenge Diary. This counts for my daily quota, so I will work on fleshing out The Color Purple and getting the movie lens started.
- It's EARLY in the am of August 12 and I'm feeling the burn. Since I am one lens ahead of schedule, I might take this time to just research and touch up existing lenses. The beginning of the challenge is the most intense because I'm building and learning at the same time. However, the learning is paying off SO much - I can see the benefits already.
However, I am going to have to do some SERIOUS thinking and planning so that I can create highly profitable lenses. At the rate that I am going (which is actually very good), I'll only make about $50 in Adsense revenue sharing, so I'm going to have to have a strategy for building lenses that actually sell stuff, both directly from Squidoo modules and from my own affiliate marketing efforts. I have read a lot and I think I know the route I need to take - I just need to determine what vehicle(s) will get me there.
So today will probably be devoted to reading, planning, and keyword research.
***
Today ended up being really CRAZY, so no keyword research for me :-(
The funny thing is though, I ended up creating a new lens anyway! It's an attempt at creating a Google friendly money-making lens - Michael Phelps Pictures | Photos | Posters | Wallpapers. Watching Michael Phelps win his 11th gold medal right now, and planning to do some soul searching and keyword research later toward more highly monetized lenses. There is a lot to learn about Squidoo from the Giant Squids, and I am getting as much as I can. It's so exciting that I find myself anxious to put it into practice!
Week One: At a Glance
I have learned A LOT about Squidoo in a relatively short period of time. I feel confident that I know what goes into a quality lens (generally), so I can make them quicker and more efficiently. This should cause me to spend less time on Squidoo and make more progress.
At least one (possibly two) of my lenses was blessed by a Squid Angel in Week One! How awesome is THAT? I will be striving to create high quality lenses so that I can keep this trend going and position myself to be awarded the coveted status of "Giant Squid" when the Squid-powers-that-be vote on the next class.
That would be cool.
Now, I'm doing more research and observation - discovering what the top earners are doing and working on duplicating.
Do You Think I'll Make It?
Week Two: The Ball Is Rolling
- August 13, and I was busy ALL day and most of the evening. I have one new lens, I LOVE My Xyron 510 | Xyron Idea Headquarters | Where To Get Refill Sticker, Laminator, and Magnet Cartridges, but right now it is BARE BONES. I'm not proud of that at all...but it will be fleshed out by morning.
Today was just so crazy that I had to publish what I had finished for the sake of ethics - it's 5 minutes to midnight as I type this. Just want you all to know that I'm not cheating on this challengs, and if there are any setbacks, I plan on being transparent. I could have cashed in my 1+ lens advantage, but I had already started the Xyron lens, so I figured I'd use it as my Day #7 requirement, even if it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Trying not to be such a perfectionist all the time.
Just doing it some of the time now ;-) - August 14, and things are going well. I finished the Xyron 510 lens as promised, and am thinking about what to write about today.
* I learned something interesting - one of my least visited lenses is getting consistent Google traffic, because of the nature of the topic. It's a very narrow niche specific lens - but I didn't have any $$ modules or affiliate links on it at all!
D'oh!
I'm starting to see how the big squids balance lenses that cater to Squidoo users and lenses that Google likes - which has sent me back to the drawing board to figure out what today's lens will be about.
If all else fails, I'll just go ahead and create that Color Purple movie lens that I've been putting off.
***
Got a great idea (Thank you, Jesus) and worked on this lens most of the day. I think it's really good, and over time I believe it will be good to me. Unique and Creative Sorority Gifts: Delta Sigma Theta was fun to create and I hope that it's fun to read. I think that I may have to so some heavy promoting in the beginning, but after a while I hope it takes a life of it's own. If I get enough positive feedback, I might submit this lens for Angel Blessing.
The Color Purple will have to wait until tomorrow - I've done enough on Squidoo for one day! - Day 10, August 15, and things are getting interesting. Found a GREAT new tool for lensmasters called SquidTop, a blog platform just for Squids! How cool is THAT? My 60DSC blog addy is http://icjackson.squidtop.com I also created that new Facebook lens that I should have created days ago, How To Create a Real Facebook Presence Without Actually Being There!
I've got lots to do, so I'll write more tomorrow! - Saturday, August 16, and today was all over the place. So, I'm cashing in my 1+ status and taking the day off. I have a couple of lenses that I want to start and chip away at, but more importantly, I have to take some time out tonight to visit the rest of the lenses in the 60DSC group so that I can rate and comment them. I see that I will probably have to do this once a week, but the funny part is that if things go the way I predict, I will finish 2 lenses by tomorrow at midnight, so I'll still end up with one in the pocket.
If I have some time, I'm going to freshen up my Facebook lenses, too - I think I see a monetization opportunity there...
- August 17 was good for Squidoo ideas, bad for production. Had to visit a friend in the hospital and a lot more, so I couldn't grind like I would normally. Also had a writing deadline this weekend (my bread and butter), so I had even less time for Squidoo. However, I still managed to get inspired and start a lens that may be one of my biggest overall.
I created another Ever lens - "The Best Infant and Toddler Bags for the Unique and Stylish Mom (and Baby!)" at http://best.babybags.ever.com. I think it has great potential, but it is going to take a lot of work. Will spend much of the morning developing this lens so that it will be as fleshed out as it can as soon as possible.
I spent some time and effort on getting the right keywords and tags for this lens, so we'll see what happens...
- Today is August 18, and I am a little behind in my work. However, I think it's because my latest lens ideas are bigger than I understood; the execution is taking more effort than I thought it would. Still buuilding up The Best Infant and Toddler Bags for the Unique and Stylish Mom (and Baby!), and it's coming along nicely. Started a lens that I haven't published yet, and published 10 Things Kids Can Do To Go Green and Reduce Environmental Impact, but there is still work that needs to be done on it. Will do that work tomorrow.
Still trying to get through all of the lenses in the group. But there are so many! I can get caught up one day this century...
Sheesh!
This challenge is really getting challenging...even if I lag behind a little bit, I WILL have 60 lenses in 60 days. Period.
- 14 days into the 60 Day Challenge, and it's starting to get serious. This two week mark is probably the first time when many who start will think of quitting. It's been fun, even though it's been hard; so how on earth will I be able to keep this up for six more weeks?
This is the time to get serious about my approach, that's how.
Today I completed a lens that I really like, Our Greatest Fear - Inspirational Poem by Marianne Williamson, and I will be able to spend some more time writing for clients and sprucing up my last two lenses, which still need some attention before I promote them.
This has been an amazing two weeks!
Week Two: At a Glance
Lots of progress is being made at a snowball's pace - a snowball rolling down a hill! I am getting more ideas and gaining great insight, but my time doesn't always accomodate my big ideas and expectations. I am going to have to do more pre-planning and strategizing concerning lens topics and timing.
Basically, I need to try and plan my Squidoo activities ahead of time in accordance to my scheduled activities for the week. That way, I won't try and produce the biggest lenses on my busiest days!
Week Three: Bumps In the Road
- August 20 and I actually forgot to create a lens today!
I was that busy!
So now I'm one in the hole. I need to create two lenses tomorrow to get back on track.
Sheesh...
- August 21 and I wasn't able to pull off two complete lenses. I was able to complete a very fun lens, The Official Certified CRAZY Test: Are You Cuckoo? Find Out!, and I'm happy with it. I started a new lens for my kids favorite show, The Raggs Kids Club Band | PBS Children's Show, and I am sure that I will complete at least two lenses tomorrow with that one because I am going to have to make a lens for each character on the show, too.
I hope this series of lenses turns out to be both cool and profitable. The show is still fairly new, so I may be able to get a lot of clickthrough from search engine visitors because there isn't much competition yet.
Will be working on these lenses in the wee hours...
- It's August 22, and I created two lenses! Whoo-hoo!
Everything Raggs | The Raggs Kids Club Band | PBS Children's Show and Raggs - Leader of the Raggs Kids Club Band are my two for the day, bringing me back from the negative. The Raggs lenses will end up giving me a surplus if I go ahead and create all the character lenses at once instead of just one a day, since they're not complicated.
We'll see...
- August 23 brings a new lens for my Raggs theme, Raggs Kids Club Band Birthday Party Theme. Since I am planning a Raggs theme party for my baby girls' birthday (they'll be a year old in a month), I might as well create a lens for it. Raggs is big in Australia and New Zealand, but it is still fairly new in the states. If they ever get big here, I think these lenses will bring in a few bucks and some nice traffic.
- August 24 is a VERY busy day for me, so I only got to create another Raggs character lens, Pido - Drummer for the Raggs Kids Club Band. I can see that these kinds of lenses will be the ones I use to catch up if I get behind. They are simple and duplicatable...but I don't get to put much of my heart and soul into them. They are strictly for the benefit of people who visit the Everything Raggs | The Raggs Kids Club Band | PBS Children's Show lens.
I'll keep these kinds of lenses in my back pocket. No hurry - Raggs is not that popular yet.
- August 25 and again, no lens. So much going on with ministry and business that I couldn't pump one out by midnight. So now, I'm one in the hole...again.
This is not good.
I'm the creator of the challenge, so I HAVE to pump out 60 quality lenses in 60 days or all is lost. Well, all won't be lost, but I will look like n idiot, so I've got to manage to fit these lenses into my life or else my reputation is toast.
- Today was a good lens day. Aug. 26 and I have created an Ever Project lens, The 25 Best Sports Movies EVER, and it's really good. It may not get the most traffic, but it is definitely one of the most fun and personal. I think those who are into sports movies will really like it.
I'm on my way back to normal...still at -1, but at least I'm back on the saddle again.
Week Three: At a Glance
The third week of the challenge was a little frustrating because the challenge and my day-to-day schedule became out of sync. I still have more ideas than time to create, so I am optimistic about being able to create 60 lenses in 60 days, but finding the time to do it is becomming harder and harder.
However, this challenge is a commitment that supercedes obastacles, and now I see why one has to undertake such a challenge in order to meet this goal. Creating 60 lenses would take FOREVER if I only did it in my spare time.
Week Four: Catching Up and Making Strides
- August 27 and there is LOTS going on in my personal life. There is a big family wedding Friday, so I am preparing for that, so I was offline most ot the day.
I found some time to start a fun lens, The Squidoo Yearbook - Funny User Pics Made With "Yearbook Yourself". Maybe it'll catch on...
- Thursday August 28th and family is coming in from out of town. No online activity. This is not good - I'm getting behind on my lenses. Now I'm at -2.
Uh oh...
- Today's the big wedding, and I was involved with that from sunup to sundown. No lenses today, so I'm at -3. This is a huge hole to work my way out of, so I will have to work double time to recover from this.
Ay yai yai...
- August 30, and I'm looking for a miracle. The challenge requires that I create 60 quality lenses in 60 days, and so far I'm 3 in the hole. However, the day proves to be very busy with family obligations and recoop from the wedding. I started a SquidWho lens for myself - Who Is I.C. Jackson?, although it's a real work in progress, so I won't count it until it goes live.
- Today is the last day of the month, and I'm feeling kind of down because I'm so behind. This is a challenge I started, and now I'm 3 days behind. I guess it's kind of a blessing, because if someone else who has fallen behind reads this and then reads further to see how I get back on track, they may become inspired to try and get back on track, too.
Today I started a few lenses - How To Be a Leader, Mobile Squids: Ways To Use Squidoo On Your Mobile Device, and ref="http://www.squidoo.com/veggie_tales_birthday_party"target="new">Veggie Tales Birthday Party Theme. I don't expect to finish all of these today, but I will continue to work on them in hopes of catching up with my work overall. If I count the ones that I have started, I am now only one in the hole.
Feeling a bit better now...
- Spetember 1 brings a new lens - The Conservative Test: Are You Really a Republican and Don't Know It Yet? It's a hot one, and I think before it's all said and done, it will be popular.
Still one behind, but I'm gaining momentum and working on building the other lenses that are not yet active.
- Today's lens is Psalm 100: Enter His Gates With Thanksgiving, and His Courts With Praise. I was hoping to create another one today an break even (technically), but it didn't happen. Working my way out of this hole is teaching me to do whatever it takes NOT to get in this position again - I've got another month of this to go!
Week Four: At a Glance
This week was the hardest so far. I got behind, and it is affecting my morale and my ability to publish lenses the same day that I create them. However, I am determined to rise to the challenge of 60 lenses in 60 days, and will soon be back on track with one lens a day. It's a tough challenge, but even if you don't get through it perfectly, it's still possible. You just have to be driven and commited to creating an income opportunity through Squidoo.
Faaast Forward - Week 8
Yay!
By that time the deadline for Giant Squid qualification has passed, and guess what? I became a Giant Squid, too! So yes, you can create 60 quality lenses in 60 days. I am now also beginning to make an income from Squidoo, too. After 60 days my monthly Lensrank averages began to level out and I also began to see the affiliate sales start rolling in. All in all it was a positive experience; it was tough building the foundation, but now I have a great collection of lenses to build upon that are making money for me already :-)
Much success to you in your own 60 Day Squidoo Challenge,
I.C. Jackson

- Congratulations on making the challenge. It's a worthy goal but not easy to achieve so my hat is off to you. I got side tracked into creating a couple of blogs so put me into the tortoise class and I'll get there eventually. Just joining the challenge has focused me on pushing forward and creating new lenses. It's a plus for anyone who wants to join. Meanwhile, newbies, don't forget to visit and comment/rate other lenses. Part of the success in this venture is the strength of a group working to improve all our lenses.
