1961 Baseball Season

The 1961 baseball season is often referred to as 61 in 61. It is the year that New York Yankees Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris decided to try and break the 34 year old home run record of Babe Ruth. It is a year of controversy in the annuls of baseball. It is the year that the American League extended their playing season to 162 games from the 154 games of years past. It is the year that the New York Yankees won the World Series over the Cincinnati Reds with 4 wins to the Reds 1.

So, let me share with you a little bit about this remarkable year in baseball 61* and what happened.

Two New York Yankees In 1961

Mickey Mantle, the center fielder for the New York Yankees was already famous for hitting home runs in 1961. His teammate Roger Maris, the right fielder, was also pretty darn good at slammin' that ball out of the park. These two guys decided that they wanted to make a run at a 34 year old record held by another famous New York Yankee, Babe Ruth. The Babe had previously hit 60 home runs in a season.

New York Press:

The press wasn't too keen on The Babe's record being broken, neither was the baseball commissioner at the time. Wheels were set in motion to try to stop the event from happening.

61* A movie about the events of the 1961 Baseball Season

One great way to learn about 61 in 61, one of the historical years in baseball, is to watch the movie that was made about Maris, Mantle, and the run for the home run title.

1961 Baseball Commissioner's Decision

baseballFord Frick was the Commissioner of Baseball in 1961. He had made some changes for the season by adding more teams to the American League and expanding the season from 154 games to 162.

About mid-season it became quite apparent to the fans, the Commissioner, and the Press that both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris had a pretty good chance of beating Babe Ruth's long standing record. The press tried the tactic of making up a rivalry between the two players that didn't exist. The Commissioner of Baseball, an old friend of Ruth, made a ruling that might have been popular with some but certainly seemed unfair to many of the fans of baseball. Commissioner Frick announced that home run number 61 which would break the record had to be hit within the first 154 games of the season. If it was hit after that it would go in the annuls of baseball with an asterisks behind it, indicating that it was accomplished within 162 games and not 154 when the Babe hit his.

I have to tell you, I was a little girl in 1961 and a huge fan of baseball and even I thought this stunk to high heaven!

Home Run Number 61 in 1961

So the race was on! Could Mantle or Maris get those home runs within 154 games? They sure as heck tried!

Mickey Mantle had 54 homers under his belt but got benched with a hip infection.

Roger Maris had 59 home runs at the end of 154 games so he didn't make it to break Babe Ruth's record within the time frame of the Commissioner of Baseball's edict. He did, however, slam out home run number 61 in game number 162 the last game of the regular season.

Did the little girl in Shirley, Indiana give one hoot that the home run came after 154 games? Nope, she was thrilled that one of her baseball heroes had done it, asterisks at the end or not! It was a great day in baseball!

A Home Run For Friends Of The Park

bevspaper steps up to the plate

Turns out that almost 49 years after Roger Maris stepped up to the plate and hit his 61st home run, the little 9 year old girl grew up and hit her own home run for the Friends of the Park and Pendleton, SC! To celebrate Nancy (OhMe) created this wonderful image for me to use. Thank you so much Nancy!

Something that Nancy shared with me: The Friends of the Park would have to stand in the hot sun and sell 130 wedges of watermelon at the Freedom Fest to make $99.

That really touched me! See how important these Charity articless are and what a significance they can make for organizations around the world? Squidoo is doing a remarkable thing this summer with the Sunshine Awards...literally making the world a better place for many by giving this money out.

Not for personal gain, not for applause, solely for the betterment of others."
