Roger Hit It Out Of The Park In 1961

From the lens 61 in 61.

I am dedicating this article 61 in 61 to Nancy and the folks in Pendleton SC. The efforts that they have put forth to have a wonderful park for kids to play in and families to enjoy is just inspiring. I'm also donating my earnings from this lens to their charity Friends Of The Park (FOP) in hopes that in some way I can help them make this dream become a reality. Let us know you stopped by today...batter up!

  • S. Randy Hayes, Mayor of Pendleton, SC Jun 21, 2010 @ 8:50 am | delete
Congratulations Nancy and great big "Thank You" to the donor. 61 tells us of the success of one man. It also tell us of his struggles. As the Mayor of Pendleton, I am greatfull that we have citizens who are willing to sacrafice and struggle because they know in the end they will meet the goal or break the record. Not for personal gain not for applause, solely for the betterment of others.
  • OhMe Jun 21, 2010 @ 7:45 pm | delete
Thank you, Mayor Hayes, for all you are doing for the town of Pendleton and for recognizing the contributions of Squidoo and special lensmasters such as Bev!
  • BevsPaper Jun 21, 2010 @ 8:26 pm | delete
Thank you so much for stopping by, Mayor Hayes! It was an honor to help out your town. I'm going to have to come down and see that park some day!

Just wanted to say congrats on getting the sunshine award. Choosing baseball to write about....what a great way to tie the lens theme into the Friends of the Park charity that you are supporting. Fantastic!

I enjoyed the story and as a proud Pendletonian I just wanted to say thank you for choosing Friends of the Park as your designated charity. Not only are you a good writer, you also have a talent for recognizing groups with a genuine sense of community. Pendleton, SC is a wonderful place to live and we thank you for your contribution!

A terrific story I knew nothing about. I wasn't born yet in 1961 so I'm glad to learn about this. I think those years must have been the height of baseball goodness, as I still hear about all of these legends. Congrats on winning the Sunshine Award. You've done such a wonderful job and Friends of the Park will benefit...without having to stand in the hot sun for this donation. Wonderful.
  • theraggededge Jun 9, 2010 @ 2:18 pm | delete
Congratulations of your Sunshine Award, Bev! Excellent lens. Blessed :-)
  • Tom V Jun 9, 2010 @ 1:26 pm | delete
I can remember the home run race, and I remember really wanting The Mick to win it. Maris turned out to be the winner, and I believe that the hoopla took a lot out of him. He was a great champion, though, humble and not given to braggadoccio.
Loved your story, and thanks for helping us down here in Pendleton...maybe we'll have a Maris (or Mantle) playing on our fields someday!
  • Scott Jun 9, 2010 @ 10:04 am | delete
Thank you so much... this is great news .... all of Pendleton thanks you!!!!

Popping back by to extend my 'congratulations' for this terrific lens winning for Friends of the Park, Bev. And congratulations to Nancy for her charity winning this award! Love the avatar Nancy created for you. Am lensrolling to my 'Crazy about Baseball' lens about my baseball memories, which has a portion of it's proceeds dedicated to 'Friends of the Park'.

What a team you two make! Inspired idea to write about Roger Maris for Pendleton's baseball park.
  • OhMe Jun 9, 2010 @ 6:27 am | delete
Oh, I am so glad you like your avatar in baseball gear. I think you look adorable but then you have certainly won my heart over with this big win!
  • Spook Jun 9, 2010 @ 4:41 am | delete
This has just made my day, so congratulations. As an aside I would have to agree with the baseball commissioner. If babe did it in 154 games, then surely to break a record must be in that timespan? Congrats once more.
  • PatinKC Jun 8, 2010 @ 10:38 pm | delete
Congratulations on your award! Well deserved. Great lens! I was a big fan of the Cardinals in '61.

I will impress my husband tonight when I tell him a few facts about baseball 61.
He'll probably fall off his chair.

I think it is so interesting that the name Roger Maris is not near as recognizable as Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. I asked my 10 yr old grandson,an avid Baseball fan, "who broke Babe Ruth's record in 1961?". When I told him the answer, he said "I have never heard of Roger Maris" and argued with me. lol
  • Michey May 22, 2010 @ 6:41 am | delete
Great lens, I am an ignorant on baseball game... LOL but I like your writings and the passion you put in your writings
  • clouda9 May 21, 2010 @ 8:22 pm | delete
These two guys are my hubby's all time faves...their cards are in his collection! Great story and wonderful that you are contributing to Friends of the Park!
  • BevsPaper May 21, 2010 @ 9:31 pm | delete
Maris and Mantle were awesome to watch! Back in those days the guys played from sheer talent and didn't resort to performance enhancing drugs. Thanks for stopping by, Correen!
  • Wednesday_Elf May 21, 2010 @ 8:55 am | delete
Loved your story about Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. I well remember 61 home runs in 1961. A perfect story to help donate to Friends of the Park. I'm well aware of this charity and Nancy's dedication to it, as I live in Pendleton! Lensrolled to my two baseball lenses.
  • BevsPaper May 21, 2010 @ 10:41 am | delete
