Never trust a pretty face!
Superstition comes in all sizes. Like with any belief the desire of the brain to make sense of relations in the world around us often makes us see links that are not there. Small time superstitions include the black cat and the clover and are rather harmless. Somewhat bigger and less harmless are the things like numerology and astrology and everything else esotheric. Here is where the scammers start cashing in on the gullability of mankind.
The biggest forms of superstition are being born out of ignorance and fear. People that also haven't got all the answers but see a business-opportunity abuse logic and start reasoning that there has to be something or someone with all the answers and exploit this invention. Soon after a lot of misguided people blindly follow his newly proclaimed deity or worse.. the prophet himself. This type of superstition is the worst out there and millions of people have died because of it, it is called religion. Some rituals and other compulsory habits it goes along with are downright barbaric but most of them are just plain silly.
This lens is to advocate the promotion of common sense and discuss the problem of outdated christianity that continues to poison the modern world we are in.

The Catholic Church
The most lucrative deception the world has ever faced.

*They claim they help the poor but they do love making those Vatican gold coins!
The Golden Throne Of God
Instead of being devoted to just a God and a prophet Catholics admire Maria as well and various other people that are declared holy. They prefer a lot of wealth and gold in their religion to praise God. The roots of this cult now rest in the Vatican under the reigning hand of the Pope. The Vatican also shares the affinity for money and has an astronomical amount of money at its disposal. Tasks of the pope include declaring people holy, confirming so-called miracles as being genuine, promoting unprotected sex and spreading of hate against homosexuals. The recently elected nazi cardinal Joseph "God's Rottweiler" Ratzinger as a leader for a billion people is a bit disturbing at first but considering his predesessors he does makes a fine addition to the long line of murdering deceivers. (promoting the spreading of HIV is murder i.m.o.)
The old popes were not as holy as one should think. Waging wars, eliminating opposition et cetera were everyday practices. In Avignon you can still see a nice overview of the world most influential criminals. Their greatest hobbies were building a bigger palace for themselves, collecting art, banning books and executinging scientists that proved the bible to be false. They also were fond of witchhunting and alchemy. The church states that they never killed a witch and that they merely had to confirm somebody was a witch. Since witches don't exist they've condemned thousands to a horrible death with their bad judgements.
The Catholic Church doesn't sell a lot of immaterial things any longer. In the past they sold tickets into heaven, influential positions, the best benches and tombs in a church, militairy aid to wars and various other products. They also collected, and probably sold, body parts from holy people (relics). In these days they pretend to be more pious and distance themselves from their past, partly by erasing evidence and partly by denial. Lourdess however is still a big payday for them. There they offer miracle cures and sell magic water. On some occasions they perform exorcisms and other occult things but that is paid out of their own reserves. Mostly the Catholic Church tries to sell hope... and there is a big market for hope in the world and a lot of money to be made!

*Real life example of how the church sells trinkets and memorabilia
What do they do with all that money? Build more elaborate churches and hire more staff to recruit the next generation of suckers to pay their bills. They also have to invest a lot in propaganda and image-building to compete with modern culture and keep religion an attractive pasttime. Also they need a large amount of cash to pay off victims of child abuse, a thing very common in their cult due to their conservative approach to sex.

just sixhundred and sixty-six.... no beasts allowed.. no sign of upcoming apocapyptic events either...
...Humans have no knowledge of the future and are not in contact with higher beings. Humans have never witnessed an apocalyps. Humans write scriptures. Humans can therefore not predict apocalypses in scriptures. Humans cannot even predict the weather. Humans write fiction. Humans like facts too. Humans invented mathematics and numbers. Humans make riddles with numbers for other humans to enjoy. Humans like riddles. Humans solve riddles. Humans cheat when they cannot find the answers. Humans contact the creator of a riddle when they cannot find the answers. Humans get frustrated when they find out the creator is long gone. Humans love speculating. Humans make up their own answers. Humans like being superstitious. Humans start believing their own answers. Humans are afraid of dying. Humans are afraid 666 might involve dying. Humans believe that 666 will kill them. Humans tell other humans to be afraid of 666. Humans run away scared when confronted with 666. Humans see 666 everywhere. Humans see the end of the world. Humans are stupid.
*In fact after doing some weird jewish math on 666 in roman cyphers it refers to Nero. He would have killed the one that referred to him as the beast and he would have had the scriptures destroyed. Since the scriptures still survive we can conclude that Nero wasn't very good in solving riddles or jewish math.

Start Your Own Cult Today!
Never work again through the power of faith!

Starting a cult is pretty easy but needs a good businessplan and certain key elements to make it a succes. The recipe is simple. Take a lot of scared illiterate people, conjure up a deity, make sure the people hold you in high esteem before you start, bestow benefits upon your followers, make sure your followers are willing to die to uphold your fantasy, devise some strict rules to live by and now you are almost set...but don't forget to include some of the original folk rituals in your to-be-founded religion!
The most important ingredient is a bad time in history and preferrably an era riddled with poverty, war and a big chance of untimely demise. These are the people to target and then you get your revelation! Tell great stories about an afterlife and all-powerfull deity you are in direct contact with. After you have a amassed a nice amount of followers you can start eliminating the competition or do you expect you are the only one? This can be easily done by ridiculing them or resort to carefully planned assasinations. Remember that the opposition will accuse you of being a cult and you can die burning on a stake for your efforts. Never forget that they are a cult to so it's just a matter of being more convincing. If you can you should get a really big book to back up your story and for convincing purposes. Call it a Bible and make sure people think it is a holy gift from the God. People are always impressed by thick books! Making it unreadable to the laymen is a must for beginners!
The next thing to ensure your survival is to implement your newly founded religion into everyday life. Make sure you are securely embedded in marriage, in education and in banking! Tip: A repetitive ritual is the best way to ensure implementation, any prayer will do as long as it is often enough to get some kind of Pavlovian response and general feeling of fullfilling a wish of God.

*nice example of using the internet as a way to reach the masses
One more thing! Keep your eye out for the unexplained. Whenever you encounter this call it a miracle and describe it to your God. If a disaster strikes you need to convince the people it is their fault for not obeying your rules properly. Nasty questions can be answered by stating that it is God's will and we are not to question his ways.
Now it's time for money making and you will never have to work again! First try selling readable versions of the book! It is destined to be a best seller!

Strangers at Your Door: How to Respond to Jehovah's Witnesses, the Mormons, Televangelists, Cults and More
How to effectively get rid of those who are after your money in God's name. Don't be too rude though.. often they are just brainwashed morrons send out on a mission by someone with brains. Pity them!
Why God does not exist.
Get rid of the brainwashing once and for all. Get the facts!
God is the answer to many problems of the majority. In fact God is an equivalent of having no answer at all. Believing in God is merely Naive Escapism. If a majority believes in something it is something to protect yourself against. Remember that the majority in your class wasn't the brightest part, the minority was gifted with the bigger brain. Think about this next time some brainwashed drone comes up to your door to convince you of false assumptions. They only want to convince you so they feel less insecure about their own faith.
Logic, semantics and how we get tricked by our brain.
In language you can find various clues as how the mind works and this way you can find out relationships between words, their meaning and the way we interpret things. Let's look at a few situations.
If someone has died relatives often ask why. The answers are mostly: "Only God knows" or "Nobody knows". In this case God is clearly a substitute for nobody. Nobody is a negative for anyone present*. So only non-existing beings know why people die. This is also a clue about the ongoing discussion on the problem death. We are not willing to accept that it all ends for no reason and therefore are willing to believe that nobody actually exists as a being known as God to provide us with meaning. Any why question almost inevitably always ends up at this point.
*Sartre already pointed out that absence can be felt as a real sensation. It all has to do with what we expect. Disappointment is a logical consequence of this. Anticipation and abstract reasoning are just is tools for survival but besides keeping us alive it also has some impractical disadvantages when it comes to explaining things.
We are finite beings. Human beings have a beginning and an end. We hate this but we suddenly expect everything else to begin and end too. Otherwise it would seem unfair. When it comes to the universe we are faced with a problem. What was there before the beginning and when will it end? We wrongfully assume that there has to be a beginning to the universe in the first place and then start deducting from there, while in fact it is quite possible that it just "is" wile we are finite. The church states that God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. So here oncemore God refers to something that needs not be and is just a device invented to provide an easy answer and put an end to our frustration.
No matter which argument you hear from the church or any theologian they all include one or more assumptions. Let us look at some:
There is a necessity for Gods existence
In fact there is no such need.
If something can be thought to exist it must have some form of truth in it.
Welcome to the wonderous world of imagination. It implies nothing but a rich fantasy and abstract thinking.
Moral laws are supreme so there has to be a supreme lawgiver.
In fact humans make up laws. Other moral values that seem to have no origin are just there because they improve the survival rate of man. They too need no deity.
The soul has to come from God.
Humans have sensitive organs that process information about our surroundings. Our brain organizes these inputs. Our feelings and doings are a combination of past experiences and a new situation. This situation can be real as well as abstract. There is no need for a soul.
Nature's perfection implicates design
Nature is far from perfect and there is no shred of evidence of design. It is complex and way more complex than we think but to state that anything else than nature is involved is a leap that cannot be made. more info on this subject
Throughout time people have believed in higher things. All these people cannot be wrong and it proves there is more.
In fact all people actually CAN be wrong and have been wrong all along. It is one of the pitfalls of abstract thinking. No perfect or higher thing exists but we can imagine it. We need to be carefull not to confuse this with reality.
The ontological proof by Anselmus
Great circular reasoning. The first thing he does is claim that God exists and adds a description. From that description he deducts that God has to exist. Clever, but stupid.
God can only be known through faith
Note that faith can be a substitute for stupidity or ignorance. The reasoning goes: I believe that God exists and therefore I know he exists because my feelings are so powerfull. Rubbish. Just a waste of a good mind and one of the weakest arguments. People saying this cannot be reasoned with.
All things require a cause distinct from and greater than itself or any of its elements
No they don't. Note that "all things" can be substituted for human beings. They are the ones in need of a cause. The world is not.
Many more arguments are cleverly thought up by theologians and if you need a good laugh you should visit this page. See if you can debunk them all or find all the hidden assumptions in their reasoning. The german philosopher Martin Heidegger tried a different approach to discover the essence of being and existence. His book Being and time (Sein und Zeit) is a tough cookie to read but does provide new insights without needing the assumptions that christians do. Nietzsche also made it a big issue to rid the world of the doctrines of the church and the misleading of man. His book "der Antichrist" is one to have read!
Being and Time
My biggest problem with Heidegger is the fact that he tried to write as hard to read as possible. Nevertheless it is a great book on a subject critical to every human.

Christianity and Creationism
What happens when religion gets debunked by science.

Creation in general
"There are thousands of creation myths among the peoples of the world. Many Christians object to having their beliefs called myths, but a myth is simply a story which is considered true and sacred by a group of people."
Contemporary Christians get smacked in the face with facts every day that tell them that what they hold for true is just plain rubbish. They get the same looks on their faces when their ancestors heard that "the earth wasn't flat and not the centre of the universe". It is understandable that they get disappointed by these facts. It's like finding out that Santa Claus doesn't exist and can be very painfull. But an interesting thing happens in the adult world. Instead of just taking the loss, like any 10 year old would do, they desperately and blindly cling to their belief or choose the way of creationsm.
Creationism comes in various flavours but the main point is that Creationists take facts from the bible and try to incorporate them in science or vice versa. It's more like the last desperate attempts to keep the Bible valid and it is bound to fail on the long run. There are only so much scientists available willing to ridicule themselves with these topics. It's like medieval science all over again with theologists discussing "how many angels can dance on the tip of a needle". Let's look at some problems for the Bible-junkies.
The age problem
The earth is ancient yet the bible says it was created not so long ago. Some Creationists say that the world was created to look older than it is. Others just stick to the bible story but say that Gods days are not the same as human days. It is more naive escapism that they advocate instead of bringing in some facts. But they only have their book to go on and there isn't much truth in there about scientific matters. Why? Because at the time the bible was written it was written by ignorant people with no real clues to science whatsoever. They claim the all-knowing God sent all the texts? Then why the hell didn't he know and teach them?
Evolution
There is no such thing as evolution in the bible. God just whipped up all the species and the only natural selection was done by Noah when he tucked them away in his arc. Some believers think that God created evolution but plays no part in it. Others state that God controls evolution and so created all things. The most used argument by creationists is that because life is so complex it has to be created by someone and see this as direct evidence. Nice circular reasoning just like the evidence for the existence of God. The believers of this crap follow the Intelligent Design Theory. The most funny creationist and most stupid ones advocate the idea that the animals look like they do to please our eyes LMFAO. The sad thing is that they are allowed to teach this to their kids. The worst thing is that teaching evolution in class is still not compulsory everywhere.
The main conclusion is that Religion and the Real World don't mix in Christianity. If you want to read more on this subject the best author is Richard Dawkins who is allergic to everything associated with Creationism. He even refuses to debate with them because he thinks that the audience might begin to think that the Creationist actually have anything to say and are a reliable debating partner.
His books nicely debunk all theories one at a time and defends his theory that religion is more like a virus than anything else.
The God Delusion
Title is self-explanatory...
The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe without Design
What if you found a watch on the beach. You'd immediately know that there has to be a creator. At least that is what the creationists claim. Dawkins neatly deflates this ridiculous theory. I'm no watch....
Unweaving the Rainbow: Science, Delusion and the Appetite for Wonder
Newton was accused by Keats for having taken the beauty out of the rainbow with a scientific explanation for the spectrum you see... Dawkins takes you on a journey that explains why science only adds more layers to the splendure of nature.
A Devil's Chaplain: Reflections on Hope, Lies, Science, and Love
Yep, Dawkins takes up arms against religion. Don't mess with Dawkins. People think that religion is responsible for terrorism? They are right....
The Truth About Charity
how christians keep people poor
There is a lot of poverty in the world. It all started when people were allowed to obtain more possesions than they need. There are consequently people that have less than they require. The church has throughout history been a home to the people who have a lot of things. These people don't want to see poor people begging in the streets. Also their selfishness brings about a feeling of guilt. They deal with these things by "helping" people through charity. They believe that charity is one of the great things about churches and christianity. What they are doing is in fact quite the contrary.
In real life no one actually really benefits. The differences stay and it is completely understandable that the people who are poor are not grateful. The rich only help people stay poor. And why should the poor be content with the crumbs from the tables of the rich? The poor still have to fill out the worst of jobs and serve meals to the rich. The poor still can't afford the schooling that their childeren need in order to escape the misery. The poor still live in bad housing against humongous rents. The poor still have bad health insurance. Jobs they get offered make them produce things they cannot even buy for themselves and under despicable conditions. That's Christian charity!
If ever you see a christian making a thanksgiving meal for the homeless realise that this is not charity. They only do this to feel good about themselves or to be seen doing it by other christians. No rich person will ever pay enough to their employees for them to become independent and no christian will feed a fellow man enough to keep them from having to come begging for more. Christian homeless shelters are only on this planet because the Christians don't want the homeless running in the streets and spoil their day. Offering someone a place to stay, a lousy McJob and food does not mean you offer them a life. That's Christian charity!
People should know this and realise that donating to a church is a waste of money, time and energy. Most of the money goes to the church itself to maintain its structure.
If you really want to help someone just do it yourself and try to live a life wherin you don't want so much stuff! Realise that not giving money to the church and not buying their memorabilia might cause the priest and reverends to have to find a real job. They will not like you for it. Remember that poor people don't want your leftovers and they don't want fake-charity. Imagine the embarresment they feel when they have to look in your trash to find toys for their kids or hold out their hands for money to get medication. The poor want opportunities and to be treated just as you would like to be treated!

But you discount much good done by the Church and missionaries and the charities that goes on day after day. Do you deny the presence of "evil" in this world? A true atheist cannot accept the concept of good and evil. But then, how do you explain a Hitler and a Saddam?

The first link you gave was full of careful omissions "bending" the truth. I really think sensible people don't need a clubhouse (church) or a mascotte (god/jesus) to be nice. History actually proves millions of people would have been better off without religion. Crusades. Inquisition. Intolerance.
jackclee wrote...
That would not be a comparable example. One is spiritual and the other is physical. Even if there turns out to be no God, I believe the positive effects of religion out weigh all the negatives. I would recommend the writings of CS Lewis. He does a much better jog explaining faith.

Words To Reconsider
meaningless concepts derived from christianity
Satanism: Morrons believing in this do not only confirm the existence of God but also believe in Satan. when picking sides they side with the other party. In essence they are exactly as dumb as christians but on the oppsing team. But again: Since there is no God there is no Satan either. Pure evil does not exist either. Good and Evil are just qualities society bestows on actions and are ever changing. As long as people just become Satanists because they want to kick against the christian world there is no problem.
Creationism: Another concept born out of religion and therefore non-valid. Just a juvenile form of criticism where religious scientists try to incorporate science into religion on the assumption that there is a Creator. Earth however was not created by God. Non-existent beings do not create anything because they don't exist.
Saviour: Associating Christ with this is plain wrong. Christ never saved anyone. He was just a poor deranged person killed by some Jews. Perhaps rightfully because his delusions threatened society. Nowadays we lock these prophets up in mental institutions. We have come a long way since then. Catholic Church still believes in Capital Punishment though.
Theology: A complete study on a non-existing deity. Waste of a verb but a necessity for many people that make their living in the con-business. The sad fact is that they hold themselves experts on non-existing matters. They give philosophy a bad name and poison it by abusing common sense for their own good.
Christianity can remain as is but needs its description altered to : A large cult that believes in an all powerfull deity that bestows greatness and eternal life on all those that follow him and pay tribute to his institutions.
Resurrection: A concept that states that people like Jesus can come back from the dead. People that walk from their graves aren't dead. Dead means you do not come back. The only ones who have left the grave weren't dead in the first place. Pronouncing people dead prematurely happened often in the past. Jesus probably suffered the same fate if he did walk from the grave. He was one of those executed that was crucified by nails and not tied onto the cross and left hanging to rot. There is a chance they made a mistake when proouncing him dead. He is dead now.. that is a fact.
Praying: Speech is a communication device to communicate with other beings. Praying is directed to a non-existing deity and thus no communication and utterly useless. It's mostly used as a tool to condition people.
Critical Terms for Religious Studies
Do not buy this book unless you want to waste money. This is one of the tools religious people use to dive even deeper into mental illness. Critics can buy this book for a better understanding of the crap the church has produced over the centuries.
ALTAR
A dutch band devoted to show the church's true face!

The story of the band and their releases
Five young guys with the same musical interest and all grown up in a small-town christian society wanted to destroy the laws of their boring surroundings with the loudest statements ever!
With the release of their demo-tape 'And God Created Satan To Blame For His Mistakes' back in 1992, the band became well-known in the death metal underground scene. It sold worldwide very well and soon every insider had heard of the brutal music and message ALTAR tried to spread.
The first real ALTAR-album 'Youth Against Christ' released in 1994 hit the scene with a shock. The intense brutality on this album got great reviews everywhere; it even went into the Dutch alternative charts. ALTAR built up an infamous live reputation and in several cities their shows got cancelled because christian politicians were afraid to burn their asses.
But the show had to and will always go on, so in the summer of 1996 the second album 'Ego Art' was a fact. New guitarist Marcel Verdurmen almost immediately influenced the sound of the band in a positive way. The songs have a bigger musical variety and he cheered up the brutal riffs with excellent solo-leads. It all resulted in playing on the biggest metal festival, Dynamo Open Air '96, in front of a wild 20.000 headed crowd.
The Album 'Provoke' was released in 1998. The reactions couldn't be better and ALTAR even got invited to play on the Dutch Lowlands festival '98, blasting away all the hippies and mainstreamers!
Hatred is a very underestimated emotion. Still ALTAR gigs got cancelled by local christian leaders but the fan support remained. Altar then created a very brutal fourth album called 'In The Name Of The Father'.The new album was presented for the first time on the well-known Waldrock-festival '99 (with an expected crowd of 7.500 people) on the 3rd of July. The songs go back to the old days; pure hatefull music and lyrics that will hit you in the face.
