68 Chevy Corvette Introduction

The third generation or "Shark", patterned after Chevrolet's "Mako Shark II" (designed by Larry Shinoda), started in 1968 and ended in 1982. This generation has the distinction of being introduced to the motoring public in an unorthodox-and unintended-fashion. 1968 marked the introduction of Mattel's now-famous Hot Wheels line of 1/64-scale die cast toy cars. General Motors had tried their best to keep the appearance of the upcoming car a secret, but the release of the Hot Wheels line several weeks before the Corvette's unveiling had a certain version of particular interest to Corvette fans: the "Custom Corvette", a GM-authorized model of the 1968 Corvette. The 1968 corvette was not actually titled "Stingray", although it was almost identical to the "Stingray" 1969 model. Nowhere on the '68 can the word "Stingray" actually be found.

68 Chevy Corvette Questions & Answers

Question: Is it possible to replace park brake shoes on the rear of a 68 corvette without taking the whole axle apart?

Answer: i never take the axle out, just take the drum off. may have to back the adjuster out if drum is groved to allow it to come off. a hammer is also helpful to loosen rusted stuck on drums

Question: Where can I get a model car (68 corvette or 00 firebird) that you can build?

Answer: http://ebay.com has the largest collection of new and used models in the world..and it's changing constantly,

here are 677 and thats just the Mustangs! Search for your favorite car!

Question: 68 corvette headlight won't close..?
Does anyone know how to manuely open and close the headlight on a 68 corvette? One will go up and down and the other came up, but won't go down. Do these lights work off of a vacuum tube or something? I noticed the car needs to be running for them to move properly. Could that be the problem maybe?

Answer: They work off vacuum. You may have a leak. On my 77 there was a switch underneath the dash by the steering column that would allow you to raise the headlights and leave them up. Good luck with it.

Question: Ihave a 68 427 corvette and was wondering if the wipers will work using the vacuum to open the panel but .....
bypassing the little switch on the firewall that activates the vacuum canister which opens the panel to let wipers out...(phew) this is tuff to explain..thanks in advance as well! you guys and girls are fantastic ..ireally really like to thank you for your most invaluable advice!

Answer: What, you're looking to re-engineer the system? Do it the easier way, open the panel to let them out, and tie them open so you don't have to worry about vacuum or switches.

Question: 68 corvette vs 78 corvette?
Which in your opinion is the better corvette?

Answer: You are getting good answers on this, and I agree with most of them. The 1968 is the choice to make because of chrome bumpers and pre-smog engine. It will be worth much more in the long run.

Also, it was the first year of the C3. Historically, first and last years of Corvette models are more valuable to collectors. Now, if you could just find a 1967 . . . .

Question: What are some common drawbacks or "achillies heel" of the 68 - 72 Corvettes?
This is my favorite model because of the front bumper. I've heard where the control arm bolts to the frame is a common rust area but what else can you add to the list of things to look for?

Answer: Besides rust in the frame rails, the biggest problem with corvettes is cracked fiberglass and improperly done body work. If you are looking to buy one, watch out for cars that are painted lighter colors like white or silver. If it's not the original color and sometimes even if it is the lighter colors are often used by sellers to cover up bad body work.

You have excellent taste in cars, I love those old steel bumper Vettes. My uncle had 2 of them when I was a kid, a red 68 and a blue '69. Both were roadsters with 427/4spd drive trains.

Question: What are 1967-68 Corvettes w/427 c.i. engines, AVERAGE condition selling for in your country?
Please state what country your in. If you know the price of the different h.p. that would be great. What is the MOST desirable and how much? These are all number matching cars.

Answer: In the USA it's worth about $25,000 to 30,000. They don't have a set price for different options. It depends on how bad the buyer wants what you got. The big engines with fuel injection or two carbs are the most desireable. "Like new" cars go from $75,000 to $100,000.

Question: Are 427 68 corvettes more valuable than 454 vettes?

Answer: Genrally yes, but It all depends on the drivetrain and other options. The '70 LS5 is comparable in value to the '68 L68 (400hp) and L36 (390hp) models, but probably not as much as the L71 (435hp) and not even close to the L88. The LS6 was not available in a production Corvette in 1970. There were a few built with the aluminum head LS7 engine, but they were road race only cars and were never available to the public. There were 188 425 h.p. LS6 cars built in 1971 and their value is fairly high, but still far less than the '68 L88.
