23% Less Likely
The women who reported getting more than six weekly hours of strenuous recreational physical activity were 23% less likely to have breast cancer, compared to sedentary women, the study shows.
Exercise appeared to benefit women, regardless of age.
But the benefits were only seen in those with no family history of breast cancer.
The results held after adjusting for other breast cancer risk factors.
The study doesn't prove that exercise single-handedly prevented breast cancer or show how exercise may lower breast cancer risk.
The effects of exercise on hormones and weight may help, the researchers suggest.

A study of more than 13,000 women from Norfolk found that women who ate the most saturated fats - such as those found in chocolate snacks and fast food - were almost twice as likely to develop cancer, compared with those who ate the least.
Many large studies have failed to find a link between fat and breast cancer, but experts say that the type of food survey used by earlier researchers may have masked the problem.
It is already known that being obese raises the risk of breast cancer, but this study points the finger at fatty foods in particular.

Aspirin May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence and DeathA new study of more than 4,000 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer shows that taking aspirin appears to significantly increase survival and reduce the risk of recurrence.
"Women who took aspirin were 50 percent less likely to die from breast cancer [during the study follow-up period] than those who did not take it," said study author Dr. Michelle Holmes, an associate professor of medicine and epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health, in Boston.
Among women who are at least one year beyond a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer, regular aspirin use may reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and death. These results were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
