Oceans: From the Surface to the Sea Floor and Everything in Between

Everyone is intrigued by the oceans of the world. Whether you are interested in the use of SONAR for sea floor mapping or the study of the creatures that live in the depths, our study of the oceans this semester will have something each of you will love!

Ocean Topography

Subsurface Land Features

The USGS (United States Geological Survey) has been responsible for creating topographic maps of the United States since 1879. Topographic maps are detailed using contour lines to show the shapes of the Earth's surface. Of the 71% of the Earth that is covered by salt water, only 1% on that surface has been mapped. Making the ocean floor one of the last great unknowns in the study of our Earth. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has been working to create comprehensive maps of the canyon found on the floor of Monterey Bay. As sea floor mapping continues around the world, so do the discoveries about life in the deep ocean.

Please explore the Mission Deep web page and leave a comment about what you found to be the most fascinating part.

I liked the 3rd mission because it showed how animals recycle and use it to survive for up to 50 years. It shows animals don't waste. Plus I liked all of the cool animals.

Mission #1 very interesting. The squid in the beginning of the video looked like a huge, floppy umbrella opening up. But I would NOT want to be under that umbrella in the rain because there is a good chance the squid would get annoyed and blast you with ink. Ew.
Mission #2 I have a question about. In the video, there were all kinds of beautiful coral in all kinds of colors. Where do they get these vibrant colors??
Mission #3 SUPER COOL! The whale bones were SO BIG I can totally believe they would feed fish for over 50 years! Wowza!

I never knew that the whale's carcasses could feed soooooo many animals. I also thought that after a year that the carcas would just decay; I didn't expect for it to last over 50 years!!!!!!!!

I thought Mission #1 was really cool. All those underwater creatures that we have never really seen before were so cool. Plus, the guy at the beginning of the video had an awesome mustache...

It was cool to find out about the different animals that lived in the abyss. I had no idea that whale bones feed animals for 50 years and I never knew so many animals could feed off one animals bones.

I loved the Discovering of Alien Life Forms video. I had no idea that the mysterious depths of the midwater was the largest habitat on Earth. I also enjoyed watching the fish light up. It is like a light show under water!

I think the Discovering of Alien Life Forms was the coolest mission because they use a remote controlled vehicle. I also learned that fish have transparent bodies, and when they eat a glowing animal, they don't become visible to other creatures.

I think the Discovery of Alien Forms is the most interesting mission because they get to use remote controlled vehicles. I also think it is cool that fish can have glowing bodies except for their stomach and when they eat a glowing animal they don't become visible to other creatures.

I think the Discovering Alien Life Forms was really cool I learned that many deep midwater animals are red in color and that this makes them almost invisible in the dim blue light that filters down from the sea surface.
